what do you think? - 2007/10/22 14:46 i know this is like my 10 millionth topic but you guys are so helpful! (much thanks!!)ok so at first i wanted to use aspen shavings but after i read alot about mites and stuff i went looking for an alternative..i thought maybe carefresh but then i remembered how bad it smelled after just a couple days (i have other small animals)then i heard about carefresh ultra and it sounds perfect for my hedgehog that ill get in about 17 days but hey whos counting?i noticed that it is a little pricey but i would only be using it for my hedgehog (other animals have pine) and im scared of using pine or aspen because of the whole wood/mite factor.plus carefresh is soft and seems alot more comfortable!i am going to try to litter train her im just not sure yet how and with what.i guess when she comes ill try a different things until we hopefully find one.any suggestions would be so great!!

again thanks for the help and sorry i wrote so much!! (i get excited thinking about her comming home!!)

Re:what do you think? - 2007/10/22 16:33 Trying a bunch of different things is fine-if you are using pine for your other animals I would try that first-just make sure it is kiln dried pine. Ann

Re:what do you think? - 2007/10/22 18:59 Don't stress so much over using wood chips and getting mites. They really aren't a big deal and generally are only an issue if there are other health problems that need dealt with.

If you are that worried about mites, you could consider treating your hedgehog preventively every 3-4 month. You will want to use Revelation and consult your vet on dosage.

Re:what do you think? - 2007/10/22 19:36 Or you could go a different route from shavings... like liners. Some folks get rather fancy and sew a few layers together - fleece and the like. Or you can buy them from someone who sews. I took a vellux blanket and cut it to size - it yielded several liners. It works well for Satin and her humans.

I put a combo of aspen, carefresh, and yesterday's news in her litter box. Yeah, that seems silly & I wouldn't necessarily recommend going out to get each of those... it kinda happened over time. First, I got aspen. And used it. But then I read about dustiness and respiratory issues. So I got carefresh. And used it plus the aspen I still had. Then I read about how if a hedgie eats the carefresh, it could be a disaster. So then I got yesterday's news. She has all three mixed together for now. Soon, the aspen will run out and she'll be down to carefresh and yesterday's news. Then just yesterday's news.

Whatever you chose, you can train her by making sure it's different than what you're using for bedding. When you find a poop in her bedding, move it to the litter box. And if you're playing with her and notice she's in the midst of going 'potty' you can escort her to her litter box.

Re:what do you think? - 2007/10/22 21:17 It usually isn't a big deal. That's not to say that if they eat the bedding it couldn't cause a blockage. I've never had a blockage from eating bedding (and neither have any of my hedgehogs).

If you worry about all the things that 'could' go wrong, you'll go crazy. Given anything you choose, there is always an unlikely scenario of something that 'could' go wrong.

Re:what do you think? - 2007/10/22 21:47 I am a huge advocate for liners for Baron - just like I'm a huge advocate for clumping litter for my cats. I'm a lazy cleaner and they get the job done. Every morning I just spot clean and once a week I take out his liners and put new ones in - very easy. Well that and Baron was litter trained in a matter of days so it makes it easier.
