Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/24 22:57 So I'm going over my shopping list of things to get before I bring my new baby home this weekend, and I definitely want to get a ceramic heater for her room. I was wondering, does anyone have any recommendations for ceramic heaters in the $30-40 dollar range? I see a bunch of them at Wal-Mart and Target, but not alot of user reviews for anything in the under $40 range.

Also, I know hedgies are nocturnal, but noises at night usually don't bother me unless they are very very loud. Would you guys recommend sleeping in the same room as her? I can either keep her cage in my room, or put in her in our office/guest bedroom (I want to keep her in a room with a door on it so it's easier to keep the heat in at night).

Thanks!

One heats the whole room and the other heats just the cage area.

What kind of wheel are you planning on using? Some are noisier than others and that is what would keep you awake....or lull you to sleep

The ceramic heat emitter- my understanding is they can put out a fair amount of heat, and are much safer than space heaters.

I was looking at doing the comfort wheel by super pet, along with the wonderful maxi-pad trick.

Thanks!

Satin has a ceramic heat emitter that goes just over her cage that's plugged into a thermostat. Got it from a store that specializes in reptiles. And that works great! I'd definitely suggest going that route if you only have one hedgie. Otherwise, it might make more sense to heat the room.

I have a ceramic heat emitter designed for a whole room. It's from Honeywell, is a "tower" design, and oscillates. I think I got it at Target. But since there aren't any blowers, you have to get really close to it to feel any heat... at which point it feels like it's burning. There seems to be no happy warm middle-ground Needless to say, I don't use it much. I'd advise not picking up the one that sounds the one I just described.

We just had a discussion about the maxi-pads on chins-n-quills that you might want to check out (starts at the 13th entry in the thread): http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126443

The comfort wheels can get sort of loud depending on the hedgehogs running style and how it is hooked up to the cage. If you think you will be bothered you could put her in the other room.

Agreed, it really seems to depend on a lot of factors - including your own tolerance. I slept in the same room as Satin once when she was on her CW, I kinda liked it - constant whirring amonst the pitter patter of little feet. Kinda comforting... reassuring that my little one was feeling all energetic. But it's also had super-squeaky times where I could hear the wheel 'scream' from the next room over and above the sound of a HEPA filter and a regular fan. Argh! Was like that for two nights in a row, but then it was back to quiet. Don't know quite what was going on that made it so loud... or that made it quiet again.

Re:Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/25 12:16 I just went and bought the comfort pet wheel, so I'm gonna try her for a few nights in my room, and if it's too intolerable, either make my own wheel or move her to the office.

As far as the ceramic heater, my mom informed me that space heaters no longer burn houses down, so I guess at this point I would consider those too (plus we have electric heat, so the more heat from an alternate source, the better- electric is very pricey!)

Re:Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/25 15:38 I know with Baron I've had him in my room for the entire time I've had him (a whopping two months almost). At first I kept waking up at night because I wasn't used to the noise, but eventually it got to the point where I wake up at around 2:30am if I DON'T hear wheeling.

It all depends on the person really....

Also I enjoy space heaters more then the ceraminc heaters mostly because I get damned cold at night and really enjoy the heat - so it keeps my little room nice a toasty at night, which Baron enjoys more then me I think.....

Re:Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/25 16:52 I've got Hector in my room and the noise doesn't bother me at all. Then again, i've also got my 8 rats, 2 chinchillas, 2 rabbits and a hamster in my room as well (not to mention the 3 dogs and a cat that sleep on my bed with me), so any noise that Hector makes is pretty much drowned out by the rest of the menagerie! Re:Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/25 17:58 Okay, thanks guys- I'll definitely try her in my room for a while then, and go for the space heater.

I did run into one problem; I went and bought the super pet wheel and a 100+ quart sterilite container and the wheel doesn't fit!!! Do I have to return the one I have for a taller one, or does anyone know any workarounds?

Thanks!

Yeah that is a drag isnt it? My guys are all in 90qrt sterlite containers. Only 1 has a cover on the container (she is my escape artist) and the rest of the herd are content to stay where they are and not climb out.

You can get some wire mesh (used for rabbit cages..bottom small square grates) and make a cover that covers the top of the cage up to where the wheel extends OR you can take the existing cover and cut it so the majority of the cage will be covered except for the wheel OR you can purchase a taller storage unit OR just got topless (I mean the container goes without a top..ahahhahahah).

Re:Ceramic Heaters - 2007/10/25 21:14 Sweet, thank you very much... I'll try to cut a hole in it and see if that works out.

My brain kept telling me to get the 90 quart but my heart was going "no! bigger is better"!. Eesh
