Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2007/11/16 17:37 Some sites sell foam hedgehog tubes. They are bright and sometimes have designs drawn on them in glitter glue.
I’ve seen the same foam in sheets Walmart and craft stores. It would be great to cut them up and use a hot glue gun to turn them into short tubes, fat tubes, skirts, a variety of tubes for all sorts of hedgie fun but they have an odd smell to them. Is anyone familiar with these and do you think they might make a hedgie sick?

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2007/11/16 22:01 Actually, I've made tubes for my hedgies out of this same craft foam and hot glue, and I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever. Now, I don't know about adding glitter and such, that seems more hazardous to me. But the normal, clear hot glue that I've used has no smell to it, especially after you wash the tubes with soap. I've even run these things through the dishwasher, and they stay in perfect shape, and have no odor. I made my own after repeatedly getting the paper toilet tubes thrown in the water dishes . Then I heard about others getting ripped off when buying them from people who crafted them and sold them over the internet. It was nice because I could make at least three different sized tubes out of one .80 cent sheet of foam. They repeatedly get thrown around every night, so I know those two are having a ball with them, whether or not they end up in the water dish . *~*Steph*~*

Thanks Aislinsadia!

The dishwasher, that's a great idea! Thanks, I will make 'em, wash them then put them out. I like them because they have give to them that a cardboard tube doesn't, making them safer for unsupervised play.

That's sad that people are getting ripped off. I've seen this foam in all colors and even wild animal prints. I especially like the tiger and cheetah prints. I agree the glitter glue can't be a good idea. I ordered a short one for Bartleby a few years back, and he wore it around his middle like a skirt. But why pay shipping when you can make 3 for less than a dollar!

I wonder why hedgehogs are so obsessed with toilet paper tubes? Is it a hiding thing, a challenge or they like the dark space? I guess we'll never know.

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2007/11/17 09:31 That’s a great idea too. Especially once the tubes are dirty. Beats hand washing them. … Yeah I am so lazy.

Wow I had no idea there were so many people out there who are as into hedgehogs as I am! I love this site.

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/02/05 21:26 Harley's hard on tubes, I had one break up in the washer and had to pick all the pieces out. It seems to work best in a hat basket or lingerie bag. “The fox has many tricks, and the hedgehog only one, but that is the best of all”

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/02/06 17:23 People are selling the foam tubes?? REALLY? For the cost of shipping, it seems it fould be better to just buy the foam yourself and make them.

Maybe I should start selling mine.... but then again, I'd waste more money in gas to get to the post office then I would make by selling them..... and the post office is only 2 blocks away.

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/02/06 18:54 Shrug...I used to sell mine. Lots of people don't want to bother with the time, and feel it's in their interest to buy them instead of the effort of making them. Granted, at that time I was selling them to pet supply stores, so there was just one trip (and I was going there anyway!) Stasi

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/02/07 06:41 Wow, I consider myself a very un-crafty person but, the foam tubes were incredibly EASY! And I got a hot glue gun for less than three dollars at A.C.Moore! They had the craft foam and some really funky material you could glue to the top of it, it's right next to the foam. It's already cut to size and everything!!My kind of crafts!! Makes me feel like I have some talent LORI, SOUTHINGTON, CT

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/08/13 00:59 How do you make these? Just glue the edges together so that it makes a circle? How long (big) should they be? My Myspace Page

I make some the same size as a toilet paper tube. I have others that are all different shapes and sizes so Harley has a variety of toys. He has one that looks like a super hero cape. He pokes his head through and runs around as Super Harley. too too funny.

I second that!

I made a tube that was big enough for Omelette to fit her whole body into. I thought maybe that's what she was trying to do with the tp tubes. But she huffed at it, and completely ignored it.

I've noticed that they prefer to have the t.p sized tubes over a tube they can fit into. You would think they want to crawl into the tube but it's not the case. I've spent ten long years studying this and it's so funny. I made Harley some foam tubes that are slightly bigger than his tp tubes. He puts the tp tube on first then the foam tube wearing both at once! I'll make him some nice new tubes this weekend and new cape (he tore up the old one) and take pics for ya'll.

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/08/13 19:28 does anyone have a picture of what these tubes look like? I've been trying to make my hedgehog stuff myself for my hedgie and if hedgehogs go nuts over these things maybe I should make a couple for my hedgehog. Owned by:

If you look at my little icon I have a blue one that I got from kelly when I first got Tweetle. Of course that is long gone. There is also pictures of hedgies with them on their heads uner the "Who's online" section to the left. They are really easy, just take foam paper, wrap it around a tp tube, glue, and take the tp tube out.

It's so easy to make one. Go to walmart or any craft store and pick up a pack of craft foam sheets. Unroll one toilet paper tube on the craft foam sheet and trace it. Cut out the traced form and use a hot glue gun to glue together and VIOLA! It's a foam tp tube.

I make mine by eye and in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Re:Foam hedgehog tubes homemade - 2008/08/14 08:46 I did not know these could be washed. I had one green one that I got from Stasi and it got all poopy so I had to sadly throw it away (or so I thought) .

However, I now have a major recycling project going where all of my local family members are saving their toilet paper tubes for Spikey. So he has a huge stash and once he wears one out, I recycle it and give him a new one.

Having said that, he may prefer some colored ones, too.
