Odd Question - 2007/11/23 23:12 Ok so here's the deal...I took Elias's igloo out of his cage *he has a plastic bottom but wire top rabbit cage* to rearrange the mess of litter that he made the night before. I walked into another room for about 30 minutes and hear like something's falling...I go to look out and there he is..in all his glory triumphantly climbing the side of his cage and proceeds to "monkey bar" his way on the top bars of the cage to reach his igloo..all the while sticking his nose in the slats of the bars and eyeing up his little house the whole time. Problem is...he kept falling arms and legs out usually head first. After about I'm assuming a half hour of this behavior I rushed to put his igloo back for fear he'd hurt himself. Funny thing is...even with his house so snuggly back in position...he keeps doing this! Most of the time he even bounces off his igloo before falling, face first, into his litter. He's never done this before in the year that we've been together....is this normal? And can he hurt himself doing this? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I bet he just learned how to do it because he really wanted that igloo back Some really do enjoy climbing and once they figure it out will continue to do it.

If you are really worried you can put some plastic strips (like cut up plastic folders) on the cage covering the first few bars so he can't get that first step up to start climbing.

Re:Odd Question - 2007/11/24 12:34 Hehehe Thanks for the advice I might try it if he doesn't knock it off. Problem with that is...he now climbs on top of his igloo then starts to climb the upper bars on his cage to get to the ceiling bars. LOL Although I am worried about his safety it is quite amusing hehehe.

Re:Odd Question - 2007/11/24 13:06 I actually covered the first few bars of the cage with clear plastic vinyl before I even got my hedge in fear of him getting his head stuck. As soon as I find the post I will link it to show you how I did it. Jessica

There's the link. Be warned though, you may want to cover the bottom THREE bars instead of the two like I did. Quentin can theoretically scale the plastic cover now that he is full grown and has done it when trying to return to his cage, like in this video of him :

Re:Odd Question - 2007/11/25 11:50 Hedgehogs have a very dense muscular system beneath their skin, so they are well protected and they bounce well. Think of it like a kid on the monkey bars; chances are good they won't get hurt.

I have over 70 hedgehogs and have owned hedgehogs for over 13 years. All my girls stay in group cages with bars, and I have never had one get hurt by climbing the bars.

I say relax and let the hedgie have some fun.

Re:Odd Question - 2007/11/26 12:17 Hehe thanks! I appreciate the advice. Elias as of last night has a new friend to distract him instead of climbing. My fiance just got me a pure bred bengal kitty for christmas! She's so adorable...just 9 weeks old. We just introduced them today...they seemed to do ok..although she is a little intimidated by him! Keep you guys updated.

Re:Odd Question - 2007/11/26 12:22 Awww, I've never been very fond of cats, but I do like bengals. I think it's because they are so unique and exotic looking. Wish I wasn't so allergic though. Have fun with your new friend! Jessica
