What insect is this? - 2007/12/19 23:16 I've never seen any video of a hedgehog eating a worm like this, or my own hedgehogs eating a worm like this. Also, the worm doesn't look like a typical mealworm... Anyone know what kind of worm this is?

Re:What insect is this? - 2007/12/19 23:24 That looks like a mealworm to me, a pretty large one, but still a mealie. It has the 6 legs so it is definitely a beetle grub and the colors and shape look mealie shaped. It might be a mealworm that is larger than normal due to treatment with juvenile hormone, that is how they make extra large mealies that never turn into beetles but just keep growing bigger and bigger until they die. Don't worry about the hormone affecting your hedgie, it is only used by insects so it can only affect them. Jessica

Re:What insect is this? - 2007/12/20 08:52 All right, because for some reason I thought it might have been a super, with the way it was moving, and how large it was. I have had my own farm for the past six months or so, and I've never had a worm like this so I just thought I'd ask *~*Steph*~*

Compared with my hedge, the one in the video does take longer. I think my girl mostly inhales her mealies. She doesn't give them much time to crawl around like that either. *pounce* *chomp*

Re:What insect is this? - 2007/12/20 20:11 Occasionally mine will drop a piece of worm out of his mouth () but he'll snap it up so quick. The way the hedgie acts in the video it might seem as if the worm is made of rubber! Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:What insect is this? - 2007/12/21 02:35 It possibly could be a superworm they look like mealies but only they are huge upto two inches. They are built just like mealies only their color is a little darker. It is quite gross to hear them in their bedding they move and it makes this really gross crunchy sound. They are a good treat but shouldn't be given often and unlike mealies they can't be refrigerated to slow down their life metomorphisis if you refrigerate superworms they will die.

Here is a link in the picture of the Superworm and two diffrent sized mealworms..

Re:What insect is this? - 2007/12/21 06:38 Hmmmm I didnt watch the video initially, just looked at the pic. It looks like he has a hard time chewing it. That would lead me to think it could be a superworm. If you suspect it is, its important to cut off the head of the worm as they do bite and can damage the internal organs of the hedgehog. I would guess that is why he looks like he is having a hard time chewing it is probably because it is biting him.

Also if you hold a superworm it will bite you...mealworms dont bite but superworms do so I guess that is a good indicator as to what type of worm it is.

That's what I was thinkin'... It just looked so strange! And it did look pretty big... man those pictures in that link were sick! From the video it looks like it could have been a giant mealworm, but who knows. Poor hedgie having to chew his food none the less!

I've never heard of a superworm but maybe my hedgie Isabel had, when ever I fed her live mealworms, she would eat the body and leave the heads in a sick little pile. We never could figure out why.
