... we had an oops-baby... - 2008/01/06 21:43 k so here's the low down. i got kujo about one month ago, and the store had said that she was about 8 or 9 weeks old. unknown to me at the time, they were keeping males and females in the same "community" cage. about 30-35 days after taking her home, she was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with being handled, and i was keeping an eye on her pretty close. so i come home this morning and go in her cage to check up on everything and make sure we've got greens across the boards, and when i pick up her igloo (yes, i spend money on a fleece igloo with a bottom, and she insists on sleeping UNDERNEATH it.....) there she is with her little brown nose pointed up and staring at me almost like "what do i do now?!" and low and behold right by her stomach is a little pink and poky baby. anybody have any ideas on what i should do? i'm kind of angry at the pet store for being so irresponsible with their housing setup, but what can i really do? now i'm just frantically searching on here and on google trying to find out what i have to do to care for it (not sure if it's a boy or girl, i'm not supposed to touch it for like... three weeks right?).

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!

Re:... we had an oops-baby... - 2008/01/07 06:52 Just leave her alone to take care of the babies. Try not to disturb the nest area anymore. Quietly put in food and water for her. Read the breeeding and babies article section here and it will answer most of your questions.

Every mom is different but in general you should leave her alone for the first 14 days or so and let mom do all the work.

Good luck and let us know how its going.

Re:... we had an oops-baby... - 2008/01/07 09:00 well, when i woke up this morning i could just see underneath the igloo where she's nesting without moving or opening anything, and i could see kujo on her side letting the baby nurse, so that's a good sign at least. Do they show their color when they are that young or are all of them pure white? I'll be sure to keep everybody updataed and in a couple weeks i'll definitely have some pictures!!!!

Thanks for the quick reply by the way- going to work and worrying about her is kind of nerve racking.

Re:... we had an oops-baby... - 2008/01/07 12:15 It sounds like Kujo is doing a great job on her own. For your part, just make sure she has quiet and privacy. DO NOT run the vacuum near her because if she feels threatened she can do damage to the baby.

There should be some older posts in this forum from people in your situation and directions on what to do, as well as the articles section that Ann provided the link to.

Here's the most important part and your new mantra. Repeat after me: "For 2 weeks, I will not bother my hedgehog and her baby except to give her food and water. I will not touch the igloo or clean the cage no matter how tempted I am or how stinky the cage gets. I will write down the birth date and make sure to separate mom and baby no later then 6 weeks or if I notice baby taking any 'unnatural interest' in mom."

Re:... we had an oops-baby... - 2008/01/07 19:52 Good work, now keep repeating it to yourself because you will be very tempted to peek in on that little baby. The wait will be worth it.
