What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/10 02:22 In other forums people talk about adding grapenuts to increase fiber in the hdgie's diet. What are your feelingis on this? Kelly? Stasi? Julie? Any of you awesome breeder types.

Re:What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/10 07:48 LOL! I recently was asked about grapenuts. Tig tried adding all bran at one point. As I recall, the only 'benefit' she saw was increasing the size of poo to OMG huge! - meaning, if you were looking for fodder for your poo cannon, well, the added fiber is great.

As for your hedgehogs health? The fiber is thought to be a substitute for the chitin that hedgies get from eating bugs. If your hedgie isn't getting any bugs, then maybe the added fiber would be beneficial. I'd still go for an all bran type, rather than the hard crunch of grape nuts, and I would add the cereal as a treat, not replacing part of the staple diet.

I'm very interested what other breeders (Kelly, Laura, Tig, Becca, Ann, Elana, Sarah, etc) have to say!

Re:What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/10 09:09 Hey, I'm an awesome breeder type..SWEEET!

I'm not sure I'd bother with it. Just give the hedgehog a nice mix of cat foods and that should have adequate fiber.

Of course, I think Purina Kitten Chow is the cure to all hedgehog problems.

Re:What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/10 11:45 I'm a sugar frosted flakes girl myself oh wait-you're talking about the hedgies?

I have given grape nuts to the hedgehogs if we have them around but I like giving mealworm beetles more. Some won't eat either one though.

I thought I heard that the chitlin aided digestion and that is why it was good, rather than just the fiber content itself.

Re:What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/10 20:22 Oh god I HATE Grape Nuts...its like eating dirt!!! YUCK... Oh anyways back to the topic. I havent tried them with my guys. The little pieces are kind of sharp and hard as rocks so I would be fussed up worrying about choking on the little pebbles or hurting their mouths. I stick with a good mix of foods and give them dried crickets, grasshoppers and of course the favorite mealies and I think that their fiber intake seems ok. Julie Pierce

Re:What's the word on grape nuts? - 2008/01/11 00:50 Thank you folks for getting back to me on that. Being that Kiki doesn't seem to like mealies i may have to consider it. I'm trying the freeze dried crickets this week. We'll see if she'll bite.
