What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 09:58 Hi,

Wondering what age my baby girl will start to use her wheel.
She's just about 8wks old, still a sleepy baby.. She's always sleeping! Just wakes up to eat and drink and poop...then back to her hedgie bag! I take her out often early eve and she toddles around for a bit then goes to sleep. Doesn't seem interested in her wheel. I put her on it the other night in case she didn't know it was there lol, but she just got off. Once she gets older, will she get interested in it or will I need to help her along?

Thanks,

lee19

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 10:22 Hi Lee19,
I am no expert (I just got my hedgie on Saturday) but she already uses her wheel. She is 8 weeks old. So it must be like human babies , they all do different things at different ages!!
Do you know if she came from a place that had a wheel in with the babies? I'm not sure if it matters, maybe if they see other hedgies run in the wheel they get curious. Although I am probably way off base.

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 11:48 I got my baby from her breeder when she was about 6 or 7 weeks old and she was already wheeling. She learned it from her mommy.

You can try setting her in her wheel during playtime and holding your hands to block the exit just so she can get the idea that she can run on it. And leave it with her overnight to see if she picks it up on her own. My little one only runs when it's dark and quiet. If yours is like mine, you might only know that she's figured it out when you see a poopy wheel one morning.

Maybe you could put a mealie on it before you turn off the lights at night to entice her to get up there on her own?

-- Oh, another idea -- you could set it in the tub when it's bathtime. Maybe yours would try to escape the water by getting into the wheel like Satin does?

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 11:51 My baby had never been introduced to the wheel at the breeders. She was 8 weeks old when I brought her home. The night I got her she was very curious about it, but didn't use it that night. the next day she got on it and was wheeling away! I think that hedgehogs are like any other animal and they will learn different skills at different times. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 12:03 Some hedgehogs take to the wheel right away and some don't. Just leave it in the cage and eventually she will figure it out.

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/22 12:58 Okay, thank you all! Her wheel is in her cage 24/7 so she'll probably pick it up at some point. Had her out today and she self-anointed for quite awhile with a new toy I gave her.. so cute!

Re:What age will baby use wheel? - 2008/01/25 00:42 When Kiki first came home she was quilling and sleeping all the time. I started giving her aveeno oat baths frequently and she perked up. I would put her on her wheel when i put her back in the cage and woud push it a little so she had to run to keep up. After about a week she was wheeling away.
