No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/23 19:17 Hello,

Checking out some food brands at my local petstore today and
I found a brand of cat food that is no grain.. It's just protein sources (chicken, chicken meal, fish meal, etc..don't recall exact ingredients) plus a string of other healthy things...just no grains. It is 50% protein however! Anyone have thoughts on that? Would that be way to high to use in a hedgie diet (I really don't know, just asking)? Or if it was mixed with some lower protein foods would it help complement the diet?

Just curious what you all think

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 00:00 Hi,

It was Innova EVO Cat Food.. 42% protein and 22% fat so high on the percentages A little pricey too... Almost $20 for 6.6 lbs from an online store... Though I think my petstore had it for less...maybe $17...
Ingredients:
Turkey, Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Herring Meal, Chicken Fat, Natural Flavors, Egg, Garlic, Apples, Carrots, Tomatoes, Cottage Cheese, Alfalfa Sprouts, Dried Chicory Root, Taurine, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Vitamins/Minerals, Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms

Another no grain brand I saw was Core by Wellness which is 50% protein, 18% fat and they have a smaller bag (like 2 lbs) for about $8.00 but then
5 lbs is around $21... (from www.onlynaturalpet.com) Might vary from local petstore...

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 01:00 It sounds very rich, and I would avoid it like the plague.

Personally, I don't think grains are a bad thing. We could all use a little roughage to keep things moving along.

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 06:34 the protein content is too high in my opinion. I don't think some grains are bad in the hedgie's diet. Emily

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 09:47 Obviously something like that would be no good on it's own. I was thinking that adding something like that in small amounts to a mix would be good but I guess not! Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 10:31 IMHO, it may be fine if you mix it with a larger amount of a diet food. But, I would think that the hedgie would pick it out since hedgie love the higher fat foods. Emily

Re:No Grain Cat Food? - 2008/01/24 10:49 Yes that was my thought, that the protein might be too high. Glad to hear what people think. I think some grains are alright as well...I just try to avoid things like beet pulp and corn gluten.
