Re:my babys - 2008/01/29 19:52 It doesn't really make for a change in the weaning date. While there are rare occasions for weaning early (males that mature early, mom runs out of milk or tries to hurt the babies), the general rule of thumb is not until 6 weeks. Stasi

Re:my babys - 2008/01/29 20:02 Did the fact that she had a litter before explane the 1 baby litter?

I made sure there was no blood or body parts any where so I am sure she didn't kill them.

Re:my babys - 2008/01/30 07:38 I've had moms that will do such a thorough cleaning job after killing their babies that you cannot find any evidence.
Hedgehog litters average 3-5, but 1 hoglet is not uncommon either. A litter of 1 would make the most sense in either a first time mom, or an older mom who's about ready to retire from breeding. Then again, a litter of 1 can mean she didn't have as many eggs to fertilize, or the male wasn't as fertile.
It happens.

Re:my babys - 2008/01/30 18:31 The bedding I use is a paper bedding by animal planet. Its very absorbent so i don't think she could clean up the mess to well. I am assuming she had a 1 baby litter.

I read in the forums that its a good idea to crush the cat food when the baby's begin to eat cat food.

Is that true and if so what week will they begin to eat solids?

Also if I decide to breed her again how long should I wait before doing so?

Re:my babys - 2008/01/30 21:07 I'm not a breeder but it sounds like your girl there has a really hard life.
You're her third owner, who she didn't have a chance to warm up to before having her litter.
She's had a litter before that she killed, possibly because she was stressed out.
Do you know how old she is? Maybe she is older and that is why her litter was small (per Stasi's comments).
I think she deserves some one on one, owner + hedgie time of just pampering before you breed her again.
Is breeding her for profit the goal or are you breeding for hobby?

Re:my babys - 2008/01/30 21:31 I agree 100% with Jeanette. This poor girl needs a break, needs time to bond with her owner, needs to get her strength and health back. Also, I am not sure if you mentionned that she was a pet store hedgie or from a breeder??? There are a lot of considerations when you decide to breed an animal and hedgehogs that are bred from pet store stock are more prone to genetic disorders and health problems.

If you are serious about becoming a breeder, you should own a hedgehog for at least a year, find a mentor to work with you and can explain about the breeding lines, etc and then you should purchase your male/females from a reputable breeder. Never breed a rescue or a pet store hedgehog.

Take this time to enjoy your new pet and learn as much as you can about her. She has been through a lot and deserves to be spoiled.

When you see her eating mom's food or trying to, then you can start crushing up her food-usually around 4 weeks or so.

In your case, I would wait awhile before breeding her again. She is less than a year old and already had 2 litters that you know of. Let her rest awhile and get to know you

Re:my babys - 2008/02/01 06:53 how do I even crush the food? I am assuming a 2 spoon method
method 1- food chopper or coffee grinder
method 2-put food in plastic bag and hit it with a rolling pin or something else heavy

Just don't get carried away you want smaller pieces but not crumbs
