18% fat kitten food too high? - 2008/01/23 19:12 Hi,

Is a 36% protein/ 18% fat kitten food too much % wise to mix with my hedgie's food? I thought I'd do one kitten brand until the baby gets a little older but didn't know if 18% fat in particular was too high.... My other brands are only 10% fat and 12% fat with protein from 28-34%.

Thanks,

Re:18% fat kitten food too high? - 2008/01/24 01:08 Go with Purina kitten chow. Trust me, I'm the chick with 80 + adult hedgies plus all the babies that pass through. It works really well.

I know everyone here wants an explanation of what is best and exactly why it is so, but I don't have one. I can't give you exact protein and fat levels to look for, I wish I could but the research just isn't there.

So until some billionaire farts a few hundred thousand into hedgehog research, that's the best I can do. Just listen to the breeders here and do what they do. Seriously, we want our hedgehogs to be healthy, stay away from the vet, and to produce lots of happy healthy offspring. If a more expensive food gave us better results, we would be using it.

Re:18% fat kitten food too high? - 2008/01/24 11:34 I by no means am trying to insult your experience with breeding Kelly. You are obviously an experienced breeder as evidenced by your beautiful hedgies!

I just don't personally use any brands like Purina, Iams, Royal Canin, etc for ANY of my own pets because I feel very particular about what's in the foods. I always read ingredient labels and don't rank a food as top shelf unless it has wholesome foods. I understand from breeders such as yourself that you feel that a diet with some fillers/by-products is good for hegdehog's cause their systems seem to do better with it. My own opinions are a little different but then we all have our own!

Thanks for your comments!

Re:18% fat kitten food too high? - 2008/01/24 18:15 Just be really careful. It is great to have your own opinion, but be careful that you don't push your own ideals onto your hedgehog. Remember that a hedgehog's system operates very differently from that of a person, and just because something is 'natural' and 'healthy' for us doesn't mean it is the best thing for the hedgehog. Hedgehogs need some things that we don't just as we need things that hedgehogs don't.

If you look at a lot of the pet foods on the store shelves, they are really catered to what people think sound good. Just take those little cans of cheese soufflé Fancy Feast with the garden greens........ it sounds like I should pop them on a plate and have a dinner party. But seriously, what cat needs cheese?

Re:18% fat kitten food too high? - 2008/01/26 22:51 Thanks for the advice Kelly, I wouldn't be anything but real careful with my baby girl! She's doing just great, I love her to pieces!
