I believe it depends on the ant (as already mentioned) and where the ant goes. If it's by the sniffer/chomper end of your hedge, then it will likely be eaten. Then you just have to worry about what that ant's been in before it got to your hedge (eg, poison for insects) If it's anywhere else, it can climb aboard and, once under the quills, be quite the pest.
