You can get them as pets here in the U.K, although they are few and far between.
Someone I know, through the rat club im a member of, used to keep them. I have to admit that I much prefer the African pygmies and think the long-eared ones look a little freaky. 
They don't make nearly as good a pet because they are much more aggressive and are difficult to tame down. Plus they can be very difficult to breed successfully, which is probably why there aren't that many of them around.
