A Few Questions - 2008/01/30 14:18 Hi, Everyone, I have had Hazel for about a week and a half now(she is about 9 weeks old) and I have a couple of questions.....

1.What time does everyone play with their little ones?? I work first shift get home at 4:00. I wait till dinner is done before getting her up(usually around 7:00)Do I have to wait that long??Do they adjust??What if it's Saturday and I want to play at 1:00 in the afternoon?

2.I have this big round strawish hemp-like ball that she can sit in, it can be kind of stringy. Is this okay for her?? She likes to chew on it and annoints herself while she's in there, I can tell she likes to be in there I'm just worried about the stringiness, but they are not limp strings they are kind of rigid

3.Every other night or so she can be kind of crabby , on those nights is it best to leave her alone? or should I keep her out so she learns to get used to it?(I haven't seen any signs of quilling)

Well thanks everyone, I love this forum!! I've learned sooo much from it!!You guys are the best!!

Lori

P.S. Thanks in advance for the million other questions I will have in the future.

Re:A Few Questions - 2008/01/30 14:46 with my hedgie... he doesnt like being played with during the day..however i wake him up and he doesnt seem to mind too much he just goes back to sleep on me, then during the night...around 12 or 11 is when he really wakes up and will run EVERY where...and play with the cat (hehe dumb kitty trys playing with him) he wont play during the day even wen i give him mealies... wen my guys crabby he usually has to go to the bathroom then i let him in his cage and take him right back out n if hes still crabby you have to keep him out or he'll think he can get his way and be put back in his cage wen ever he wants by acting like that...so i woudlnt recommend puttin him back everytime he gets grumpy.

Re:A Few Questions - 2008/01/30 20:22 I usually play with my little one as late as midnight or so... BUT I sometimes wake him up during the daytime. I don't think it really matters when I wake him up but it usually starts with him being grumpy, luckily that passes quickly enough. I make sure that I make time each day to play with my hedgie, even if he's being grumpy. Sometimes I'll just watch TV or read with him on my lap.

As far as the stringy thing goes.. I've always been warned about things wrapping around little legs so it might be best to just skip it, especially if you're not around to supervise.

Re:A Few Questions - 2008/01/30 21:23 Hi Lori
You will find a common ground...with everything in life a predictable schedule always helps with adapting to change. I would set a time in the evening that works for you and take baby out around that same time each night, make sure the lights are dim, offer him some snacks. 9 wks is prime quilling time and the difference you see in temperment day to day is most likely because it is starting. Quilling is pretty miserable for them. A warm aveeno bath can help them feel a little better. Take your baby out every night and dont but her back when there are behavioral displays...ie huffing, balling up, etc. By feeding into any bad behaviors you are only reinforcing them.

Also keep in mind that a hedgehog sleeps a lot and a baby hedgehog sleeps even more than a lot. Baby may not want to play but instead snuggle up and snooze with you when you have her out. That is ok...she will tell you what she needs from you. Offer up toys but dont get discouraged if she doesnt take to them right away or if she ignores them all together.

Hope this helps and good luck with you precious new baby!!!

You can get her up in the afternoon if you want to-some of ours wake up regularly during the day. Others don't like it as much. Sort of like day v night people. A lot of ours wake up at dinnertime so you may want to give her new food in the late afternoon

If the ball has strings, I would only use it under your supervision to make sure the strings don't get caught on her toes or nails.

Pick her up whether she is grumpy or not. It could be quilling, she could not like being woken up, or she just may want to show you who is boss. Sometimes they will be grumpy at first and then snap out of it pretty quickly.

Re:A Few Questions - 2008/01/31 21:45 I agree with the doing things around the same time every day. I also notice they are just grumpy when woken. Kiki can handle day time play it just take a little longer for her to wake up.
