Hmmm...Babies? - 2008/02/01 08:13
Okay, so I bred my Female late December with my male. This is the first time I've bred her (I have to female breeders). I know she bred, because I saw it. I totally forgot to write it down, but I know it happened somewhere between the 19th and the 27th, most likely. In the past two weeks she has cut down on eating and water. Then a about 5 days ago, I put a nest inside her cage, which she stays in, except when she's grabbing a bite to eat, or something to drink. About 2 days ago she dragged her blanket all the way from the other side of the cage and stuffed it in the next, so you can't really see it. I haven't heard any squeaks, so I don't think there are babies. I'm just wondering if you think she is going to have babies, or not.
Thanks!

Re:Hmmm...Babies? - 2008/02/01 08:43
When in doubt, go with "she will". Or possibly, "she does". Typically, the major nesting phase around here goes about 24-48 hours before the birth, though some hedgehogs (both male and female) will occasionally have a reorganization phase where they may create, destroy, create, destroy, etc. a nest or sleeping spot. I am a little concerned about her cutting down on her food intake though.... My girls seem to eat like (har har) hogs until 24-48 hours before they deliver, in fact, I have seen food intake as much as triple during late pregnancy up to that point. Watch her closely, make sure she is eating, drinking, and pooping appropriately, and keep your ears open. What kind of nest do you have for her? Anything you can carefully peek into without disturbing her arrangements? Becca

Jacob, Are we talking about Starlight? If so then yes I would expect that will have babies any day now as she did the same thing with me before she had her litter of 5.-Dani

She seem to be eating more during the day, since about 2 days ago, she's probably increased her food take in, more then in the last week. She's pooping, totally fine, I know because I just cleaned her cage and there is lots of poop, just in the last two days. So she must be eating more then I think. And she has been drinking plently. I have an up-side-down gallon bucket with a hole in the side. I did peak in and it seems that she is just sleeping.

Yes, Starlight! - Did she drag in a blanket, and do all the things I'm saying? If so, how long from when she started doing these things did she have her litter?

*Sigh* - I still do not hear babies. Man, this is my 3rd litter, and definitely the most aggravating

So,
I checked her out last night, and her nipples are definitely visible. That means pretty soon, correct?

Jacob, Yep anytime now I would guess that you will find babies this afternoon or tomorrow at the latest. Sorry she is being such a pill about having the babies for you but hey at least she is displaying pregnant signs for you. I saw her pull her blanket into her nest and saw her nipples and the next day I was making my rounds and just grabbed up her nest box and lo and behold there was babies. LOL.

Just out of curiosity, did you ever find blood near the vaginal opening of your female before she gives birth? I've heard of this with other animals, but I've never heard of this sign being seen in hedgehogs. Kind of like the increased weight gain, food intake, rearranging of bedding, different attitudes, pronounced teats/etc that go along with a preggo hog.

Re:Hmmm...Babies? - 2008/02/14 11:45
Alright, so no babies yet. I'm guessing she isn't/wasn't pregnant, but I'm going to wait another week and then try to re-breed her. This time I'm going to keep track of her weight, and the dates I bred her. This will make it a lot simpler on me!
I also took out her nest since it doesn't seem like she's going to be having any babies.

I would wait a bit longer just to make sure. Hedgehogs have been known to carry for up through 52 days from last breeding.

Starlight went all the way to 60 days the first and only time I bred her. So it is like Stasi said i would leave the nest box in there another week or two. best of luck

60 Days! Wow! Alright, I'll keep it in there for another week or so. We are coming up on at least 51 days.

Re:Hmmm...Babies? - 2008/02/15 13:16
Going with the dates you listed at the beginning of this thread, she's just 8 weeks out from her initial breeding. You need to go 60 days (going by what Dani is saying she did last time) from her LAST breeding (Dec. 27th) which would mean leaving her with a nest box until the 21st of Feb.

Alright, the nest has been back in there for 2 or 3 days now. She has now brought her blanket in the nest, and she's campin' out.
Man, this is the most confusing Hedgehog ever!
Still no babies..

Alright,
No babies, it's definitely been over 60 days, so I'm taking out the nest and I'm going to try and re-breed her soon.

jacob, aw man sorry I was hoping she was just being slow about producing if you put your male in there and she goes crazy making noise and charging him she is already pregnant but I think you have waited long enough for her to have delievered if she was going too.
