throwing up? - 2008/02/03 09:30 i brought penelope to school for pet day. everyone had a blast looking at her and feeling her quills. anyway she stayed asleep (as usual) the whole day except when people started getting noisy and ate okay. when it was time to go home, my bf (he was holding her cage) said that she was throwing up!! i checked and there was foamy stuff around her mouth. she gave a squeak, heaved, then out came more foamy stuff!! no food particles. just white foam kind of like the foam when they annoint, but she didnt anoint

was it vomit? could she have been experiencing motion sickness? (my bf doesnt have the steadiest hands). Katherine Y

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/03 11:09 Ava has vomited when she rides in the car and when I took her to the vet when I first brought her home. Her stomach must have been empty because it was just bile so it was foamy.
Have you taken her on outings like this before and she hasn't vomited? Ava's mom!

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/03 13:39 It seriously sounds like she was just foaming from anointing. What makes you rule out anointing? If she threw up and there was nothing in her stomach, I'm not sure that it would be foamy AND white like that- and if she ate the night before there would be food or some kind of coloring other than the white foam from anointing. There were probably tons of new smells and meeting all those people would definitely be cause for some anointing. I've had my hogs produce the foam but not necessarily spread it over their quills sometimes- it may look like they threw up on something, but it's just another way of producing the foam for anointing. There have even been times when they spread it over the thing that makes them anoint too. I hope everything is okay with your little one- you may just want to call the vet and consult with them what happened over the phone anyway.

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/03 14:08 Car sickness is very common with hedgehogs. I always tell my customers if they have a fairly long car ride to expect that car sickness is a possibility. If she was annointing you would not see the gagging you noticed. But its nothing to worry about...its a common problem. Julie Pierce

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/03 17:03 When a hedgehog is vomiting, there is no question. It's hard to miss. I think you are safe because it's sounds like foam as opposed to food. Are you sure she wasn't coughing?

I'd make sure she has access to lots of water, stays warm and is eating. Keep a close eye on her and don't hesitate to rush her to a vet if she does the least little thing. Hedgehogs are small so it's important to catch problems early.

Though as long as she hasn't done anything else, it sounds like she'll be okay. She may have swallowed too much of her own anointing foam. So relax and just watch her. And btw Penelope is a GREAT name for a hedgehog!

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/03 18:10 Hedgehogs definately do get motion sickness, and can throw up from it. Once she is home, ad has a chance to get settled in, she should be perfectly fine. If it continues, or she acts off the next day, it is worth getting her checked out, but I am VERY doubtful that it will.

Re:throwing up? - 2008/02/04 17:17 I agree with everyone that it could be anointing or motion sickness, but she could have just gotten herself worked up and yacked. It happens to human kids all the time, so why not a hedgehog? Or maybe it's foamy because she was going to anoint but then she got excited and vomited. I wouldn't worry unless it continues. If it continues, go to a vet.
