litter training - 2008/02/03 20:42 i am kind of new to hedgehogs, so i have a couple questions about how to get a hedgie to use a litterbox...it's been kind of time consuming digging around through muffin's bedding

is it too late to litter train my hedgie if she is 4 months old?
and where do i buy/how do i make a litter box?

Re:litter training - 2008/02/04 09:47 I got one of those corner litter boxes for ferrets I found at PetCo, but you can use things like cookie sheets (with sides) or probably even a frisbee for that matter... just something that has sides to hold in the litter, poos, and pees... but not too high since hedgie needs to climb in and out.

Fill it with something other than what you use for her regular bedding (for example, I use vellux liners for her bedding and a combination of Yesterday's News & Carefresh in her litter box). I've read other people use aspen shavings, paper towels, etc...

When you find a poopie in her regular bedding, move it to her litter box. When she has that look like she "has to go" (tail is up), move her to her litter box to complete the process.

Re:litter training - 2008/02/04 17:19 I don't bother with litter training. A simple cage cleaning once or twice a week only takes 5 mins.

Re:litter training - 2008/02/05 15:34 I was very lucky in that my hedgie arrived litter trained! Although how he managed to work out which was the litter tray when the whole cage was filled with woodshavings... he must be a very clever hog! Lauren, Hufflepuff and Scarlet

Re:litter training - 2008/04/20 17:25 I've actually had a really successful attempt at litter training little hudson. I started out by every time I got him out of his little house and I knew he was going to poop like he does every time, I put him in the litter box until he did his business and then gave him a mealworm. I've used a foil loaf pan with small pet litter and he's doing great! You just have to find the corner your little guy poops in most frequently and start implementing a litter box. Good luck!

Re:litter training - 2008/04/20 17:54 I have no problem with my hedgehog pooping in the same place in her cage. She does that automatically. It's of course not in the little box I bought for her but what are you gonna do My problem more is her pooping on people. She poops on everyone she meets and usually she does it when I can't see her tail like when she crawls under something. She is making enemies among my friends. She also poops a massive string of poop like she saved it all up and then emptied at that very moment. The one today was like a quarter of the length of her whole body. Her cage poops are so tiny. Anyone have any advice? Becky

Re:litter training - 2008/04/21 08:24 Remember she's still a baby. When you first wake her up, putting her in a playpen, or temporary containment box (a small sterlite bin works great) and let her potty there prior to playing with her. See if that helps. Stasi

Re:litter training - 2008/04/21 22:21 I agree, everytime I get Hudson out to play I only let him explore a towel on my floor and periodically set him back in the box until he does his duty. And if there's a meal worm on hand he gets a snack for doing a good job! You just have to be consistent and try and get it all out of him before he gets free run, or especially meets new friends!
