Cage setup is this good suggestions please - 2008/02/07 14:13 Heya guys this is my first post and i am the proud soon to be owner of Minx Boy 2 from Stasi of Terrapinhedgehogs.com ( his real name is Skwisgaar)
i have been doing hours and hours of research and have come up with the following cage setup

Need suggestions
deffinately want to go with aspen shavings though
am going to use a standard water bottle and a no tip food bowl
im starting to make a ssleeping bag for him and some beds and blankets and such
ill be using a pigloo as well

He's doing very well - growing, experimenting with the hard kibble, and eating quite a bit of ground food at this point.

Re:Cage setup is this good suggestions please - 2008/02/07 15:36 Agreed, that cage size (47.25"x23"x22") is great. And the top door on the Marchioro's is wonderful for moving the wheel in and out.

The wheel - I've read some positive and some negative reviews on Vicki's wheels. The complaint, by a few people, was that the bucket wasn't adjustable so the pee didn't drain off because it was at the wrong angle and they couldnt fix it. I'd think that, if that happened, you could probably just put an extra layer of fleece (or whatever you're using for bedding) under one side of the base and get the right angle.

Oh, oops... you're going with shavings... you could tape or hot glue a something to one side of the base IF it has that problem... which it very well may not.

Overall, sounds good. But how about a thermometer to make sure his house is at the right temp? And, depending on how warm/cool your place is, you may need supplemental heating sources that are on thermostat control.

ill just use my infrared thermometer and for heating i hav e a space heater ill keep near the table on which the cage is at around 75 degrees

I personally LOVE Carefresh even though it's costs and arm and a leg. If you can get your hedge to use the litterbox, then Carefresh lasts much longer and is down right affordable. I like it because they can burrow, hide and it's warm too. Harley and Isabel liked to bury their bodies under it and just leave thier ears and eyes exposed so they are like hedgehog alliagtors watching and waiting. I always hear Jaws music in my head when I see them do this! So cute.

Re:Cage setup is this good suggestions please - 2008/02/08 15:44 Before my hedgie was litter box trained I used carefresh in her whole cage. Now that she is litter box trained I just use the carefresh in her litter box. It works great!
