Biting: How often for you guys? - 2008/02/07 14:38
I should REALLY know by now.
I got Schöndorn on my lap, he finds my fingers interesting, starts to lick and nibble.... and I just sit there with a silly smile and think "Aw! I has a flavour".... untill CHOMP, a piece of skin is missing
So, fellow Hedgie Moms and Dads... how often have you managed to become a dietary supplement?

I get bitten on average a couple times a year if that much. Keep in mind I usually have one hedgehog at a time. Most bites occur beause 1. your hedge is a baby and babies tend to nip or 2. you smelled so interesting your hedgehog got excited.
It's easy to avoid being bitten. Once your pet starts licking you excitedly, move your hand. LOL!
The only person Harley has bitten so far is my Dad. He had just finished grilling something and I suppose Harley thought he might be a walking steak!
~Sara
UPDATE: I almost forgot the one exception to the biting rule. If you smoke or handle anything with nicotine, hedgehogs hate it and will bite you.

Little Miss Satin will be 1yr in a bit over a month and has chomped me twice in the past two months or so.
Once was after I was in a swimming pool. I washed my hands a number of times between swimming and picking her up, but that chemical scent just stays for a couple days Didn't break the skin, but sure as heck surprised me. She did that once last year too -- under the same post-swimming pool conditions.
The other time I was holding her in one hand and putting my finger (other hand) under her front paw to check out her nails. I've done this before and since without problems. Without warning, she grabbed onto a different finger with her teeth and would NOT let go. Managed to draw a little blood. I was just so astonished that she was holding on...and holding on...and holding on that I didn't do much but stare at her in amazement while thinking: owwwwwwwwwww!!!
I'm pretty good at avoiding the "lick, lick, chomp" -- learned to move fast from when I had guinea piggs (yes, that's two g's in pigg... because they were extra good girls).
Just prepare for it to always be "lick, lick, chomp"... not just "lick, lick, im so cute, lick" and remove your tasty bits from hedgie's chomping area super fast.

I have only gotten a real bite about 2 times(and I've had hedgies since 2004). But it's mostly because I was really cautious around them when I first got them, but now I just know when they're likely to bite. Some hedgehogs tend to bite more than others. I have one girl who bits everything with out warning. Then the other two rarely bite, unless I have forgotten to wash my hands before holding. Now, babies do normally bite a lot more because everything is new to them and they are just testing things out.

Me... never. Ava licked me once like I tasted good and she got handed off to Dad while I rewashed my hands. Carlo on the other hand tastes REAL good and gets nibbled at least a couple of times a week (Ava likes it when Dad eats garlic).

Mind you, I KNOW I had it coming. Lick, lick CHOMP is indeed the pattern.... I was just plain stupid. "Aw, how cute, he nibbles me"... as if the previous bits had not warned me enough already

I know you've gotten a hard time about your hedgehog's... henry the viii physique but don't be so hard on yourself. It's very easy to end up with a fat hedge and yours is adorable!!!! When I put Bartleby on a diet (he was HUGE, I as a 1st time hedge owner had him on the wrong food) and boy was he grumpy! Oh and I LOVE the hat, so cute.

There are only two parts of me that Quentin enjoys to bite/eat/annoint with and those are my hair and my bra. He'll climb up my shirt and dig around and start a fight with it or something, the only problem is when he misses biting it and grabs other things. As for my hair he enjoys digging through it and biting and digging away at it, I also get a good brushing out of it as well. Only once has he bitten my hand for any reason other than there being a smell there that he wants to annoint with (usually a food or once when I tried on a bunch of scents at Bath and Body) and that was when I was walking back from the park with him and handled him wrong because I was trying to avoid being pooped on and got a good warning chomp out of him. Other than that no nibbling from him even. Its fun, I let my friends feel his little vampire teeth when they comment on them and they think I'm nuts telling them to feel them. But they can rub their finger against his mouth with no chomping!

My hedgie will bite hands/ fingers if I have been eating something recently that she thinks smells good. Even if I can't see the food on my hands anymore she will try to take a taste. I think a few favorites here were the smell of chocolate, chinese food and fish food....

Yeah it kinda looks like he's getting sorted into his Hogwarts house! I have a feeling he'd go into Hufflepuff, I know my Noodles would!
Also, I love poking hedgie belly fat too. It's a vice of mine. I ESPECIALLY love to poke the fat that's right under the quill skirt above their back legs... I think it's the softest part of them Noodles doesn't really let me do it, but sometimes Cotton will let me pet her there, and it's so soft! Cocoa is still getting used to us and is trying to put on weight after what happened her first week, so her belly is safe from my poking for now

As of last night, Harley is destined for Griffindor, if that's the house where all the escape artist, late night mischief makers stay. He managed to pull himself out of his play pen, a large plastic bin. I have no idea how he did it but I heard a THUMP and came to find him sitting on top his Hedge House, next to the bin, looking smugly innocent. He's a clever one. Also his tail is very soft and has black spots on it!

On average run of the mill play time Kiki doesn't usually bite bite but when i invade her space she does. Invading space is when i stroke her belly and face with my fingers for long periods of time. I know i have it comming but I'm trying to teach her to be patient. It's had a huge effect. She will let me pet her cute cheeks or chin for quite a while now. I'm willing to bleed a little for it.
