Money? - 2008/02/07 17:04 Just wondering about the cost of a hedgie....i know i can pay for all its things like a cage, food, wheel....etc

but just wondering, if im not breeding how likely is it that my hedgie will become sick and need a $500-1000 vet bill?

I have had two guinea pigs for 2 1/2 years and i have not needed to take them for serious problems... are hedgies most likely to get serious problems?

Thanks, im new around her and really appriciate the help

There is an article around here somewhere that other people were talking about (I think Kelly is working on it ?) that details the costs for owning a hedgehog.

Hopefully one of the admins will pop in soon and point you in the direction of that. You might be able to use the search option and search for "cost of owning a hedgehog" and that might pull up the post that leads you to that article.

PS... hedgie ownership is worth every penny.

Re:Money? - 2008/02/07 18:07 Kelly did write an article, it's pinned to the top of this forum and here's the link:

The biggest thing about hedgehogs isn't that their care costs allot as much as it's hard to find a vet who knows how to treat hedgehogs. while exotic vets do tend to charge more you may also have to travel a distance to get to a vet who can help your hedge.

It's not that it's likely, it's just that it's possible. We had a rabbit and hamsters and cats and dogs for years (and years and years), and no unexpected vet bills. Then we got mice, and rabbits, and rats, and a hedgehog, and we have had some really amazing vet bills -- so make sure your parents are willing to pay what is necessary, even if you have to promise to pay them back, in installments. The animals deserve that.
