quill thickness - 2005/11/23 14:44 Is there a link between genetics and quill thinkness in hedgehogs. I have a few that seem to have the sharpest little quills while others seem to have nice thick "softer" quills. I've also noticed it seems the more huffy the hog the sharper those darn qills are.....Just wondering what your thoughts are.

Re:quill thickness - 2005/11/23 16:08 I think there is a genetic link for quill thickness. However, I think in some cases there is also a nutritional aspect. I have had a couple of rescues who had had major nutritional problems as young hedgehogs that had very thin quills, almost like they never shed their last coat of baby quills and grew in their adult quills.

Re:quill thickness - 2005/11/23 16:55 I think the white quills are the sharpest and thickest. Ok, maybe not, but it seems that way a lot of the time. It is the worst in hoglets that are midway through quilling, so they have some long adult quills and then the shorter baby quills. Those long quills really hurt because they throw off the surface to hand ratio and they really poke ya.

I don't think it's that the more huffy hogs have sharper quills. It seems that way because either the hog is huffy because it is quilling so it's crossing its quills more and also you have that whole spacial relation thing I mentioned above or the hog is just huffy and crossing its quills with the intention of being sharp.

I just clipped a lot of nails and my hands are sore from some unhappy hogs that really didn't want me messing with their feet. Most of them were completely relaxed, but 1 or 2 mad hogs can really hurt when they want to.
