Prospective breeder - 2008/02/18 12:38 Hi everyone, I'm in need of some advice please.

I am looking in to buying a female hog to breed with my male and have a couple of questions. Firstly how related is acceptable? Obviously I do not want to risk inbred hogs but it is very difficult to find a female here with no links, so how many links and how far back is acceptable?

Also colourwise, I have a cinnacot snowflake and the female I am looking at are either cinnacot or apricot, does this mean that all of their babies will be light?

Thanks

Well, I'm not the expert on all of this but I would guess that if there is a relation 4 or so generations back that it should be ok. But I would wait to hear from the 'experts' to be sure.

And as far as the color. No having to cinnacots will not mean all cinnacot babies. It depends on the ancestor's colors as well. I think up to 8 generations back. If you have 2 cinnacots/apricots that you breed, there could very well be all light babies, but on the other hand, you could end up with darker babies. Again, it really just depends on all the colors are of the ancestors and I'm not sure if cinnacot is recessive or dominate gene(which would have some play in that as well).

Yeah, it's great that you're figuring out all of the details now, before you get a female and breed. There are way too many people who jump in to all of this before they research it!! Oh and all though I wasn't much of a help, it's my pleasure

Re:Prospective breeder - 2008/02/18 16:14 lozzabubble, you're in the UK right? Have you looked into what if would take and if it would be possible to import a hedgehog from a neighboring country that was unrelated to your hedgehog? Such as Ireland or France?
If it is even possible/feasible/financially viable to do so you may then be able to sell your babies to other breeders who would be interested in adding new blood to their own herds?

Re:Prospective breeder - 2008/02/19 13:24 Hi,

I have decided on purchasing the hog I was interested in. I have checked her lineage with both the UK registry keeper and also a lady from the International registry and all is fine.

In the future I would love to import some hedgies but for now I am very excited about getting my 1st female

Re:Prospective breeder - 2008/02/20 15:20 What a cutie!!!!

Ugh, names are proving to be so difficult Scarlet is nice. Other names that come to mind are Spice and Starling. Or, Sake (she's sort of the color of sake, right? )

Lol. I have no idea. But I did find some cute names on here: http://petrix.com/dognames/

Good luck with coming up with a name!!!!

Re:Prospective breeder - 2008/02/20 16:01 Its a Japanese rice wine:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sake

Every sake (pronounced saw-kay more or less) I've ever seen has been a light tan champagne color, hence my thought of matching it the color of your hedgie addition

Re:Prospective breeder - 2008/02/20 19:47 If you know her actual date of birth you can type it into wikipedia... it will give you a bunch of important events and famous birthdays that happened throughout history on that day. I always find a lot of good ideas tucked in there.

ps. Ham was born on the same day that Boston was founded..
