Litter Tray - 2008/02/25 21:07 Hi, we'd like to see if we could litter train Lychee. I bought a ferret litter tray but it came and it was MASSIVE and would take up too much room I don't know if they do smaller ones but we've got a oblong bowl that would probably do the trick. What sort of area do they need for their buissness, the bowl I have in mind is about 4ish by 7ish inches. Also what sort of litter is good for Hedgehogs. I've heard clumping cat litter is bad but are there any that are good?

Re:Litter Tray - 2008/02/25 21:37 The litter trays do come in different sizes, some hedgehogs are sloppy and some like to be clean and will stop doing their business in the box if they feel it's too full. So you want a box that's large enough for the hedgehog to at least easily turn around in and low enough to the ground they can easily climb into it.

Make sure to use non clumping litter or Carefresh. If you use the rocky litter and have a male hedgehog be sure to keep an eye on his bits and pieces as the litter rocks can sometimes get caught up in there.

Litter training takes vigilance and patience. If your hedgehog is already doing his/her business in one spot, it's best to put the box there and seed it with some of his old business to help him get the hint. It's great to have a litter trained hedgehog. Much easier to keep up with and when they stop using the litter box that's a sign they may not be feeling well.

Good luck!

Re:Litter Tray - 2008/02/25 22:08 All I had to do to litter train Ava was to put her litter tray under her wheel and line it with paper towels. The exercise naturally makes them have to go.

I think we were just really lucky though because she has NEVER gone anywhere but the tray. Well she'll poop on us sometimes but not in her bedding

Maybe Julie just breeds SUPER hedgies

Re:Litter Tray - 2008/02/27 18:49 a cookie sheet works well as an inexpensive litter tray. i bought one at the dollar store. i put it under the wheel so that everything will fall into the pan. i use carefresh, although you might just try paper towels to start off with. stay away from corn cob type litter as that can stick to hedgies' gentlemanly parts. just make sure whatever you use it's different than what you use as bedding. some hedgehogs never learn to use the litter box, but don't let that discourage you. as hedgehogmadhatter said it takes patience.
