NewBabyNewMember - 2008/03/05 09:41
Hi! I'm new to the Hedgehog World Forum and I'm also a new Mommy . My beautiful baby Beatrix was born in February and I'm going to pick her up from Laura Tong just before Easter.
When I was a kid my favorite children's book was Beatrix Potter's tale of Mrs. Tittlewinks the hedgehog. I've heard (though this is certainly not a for sure fact) that Potter wrote that story based on her own pet hedgehog. That's how my Beatrix got her name.
Bea has an ENORMOUS cage (28x42'' C&C) to come home to. I hope she doesn't squeeze her little self through the squares . She has a giant silent wheel, a hiding place, a fleecey sleeping bag, ferret toys to push around, a litter box that I hope and pray she will use, a food dish with pretty little flure-de-lis on the side and a water bottle.
My ONLY problem is what to feed her. I got Hedgehog food off Amazon before I read the horror stories about 8 in 1 and the ingredients. So, I won't be feeding that to her. I also have a cat food (no corn fillers, perfect percentage of protein and fat) but I need a suggestion of what to mix it with.
Bea is perfect in every way and I know I'll love her . I can't wait to make the trip to Kansas in a few weeks.

Re:NewBabyNewMember - 2008/03/05 11:15 Hi, welcome to the crazy world of hedgies!!Sounds like you have a great setup for your new baby.Good luck with her!!

Did you ask Laura if she has food you can buy?I think that breeders usually have food mixed up, that your little one would be used to. Sometimes it's better to buy from them because you don't have to have so much extra food around.

Re:NewBabyNewMember - 2008/03/05 11:28 For food, I'd continue feeding your baby whatever Laura has him on for awhile. He'll be leaving his mommy, his brothers, and sisters; his home; everything that he's ever known. So it's a good idea to keep as many things the same as possible (like food)... at least for a little while.

Lori611 is right on target... Ask Laura for some food to take home with you. And ask what's in it so you can buy the same stuff when it starts running out.

Re:NewBabyNewMember - 2008/03/06 17:07 I am so happy for you!

Welcome to hedgehog world!!

You will be so happy with your new baby, and you sound like such a great mom already!

As for food, I buy mine from Kelly at Hamor Hollow. She sells a mixture of 7-8 cat foods that offer a great source of nutrition for a hedgie. As smhufflepuff suggested, keep your hedgie on whatever Laura has him on, and gradually change.

If you are interested in ordering from kelly, she is an Admin on this site and she can ship her food to you, so go ahead and talk to her!

Once again, welcome! And good luck with Beatrix !

Re:NewBabyNewMember - 2008/03/06 18:25 i'm also excited to see new pics! as for food, it's always easier to just buy food from breeders. you don't have to worry about making sure you have the all the right nutrients, or how much to use of what.... it costs less money, it's less time consuming, and overall just better for you and your new hedgie. just ask the breeder if she sells any of her food mixture.
