Playmates? - 2008/03/09 16:25 When housed together, do hedgehogs play together? I have two cats so that they can keep eachother company while I'm out of the house. I thought hedgies were fairly solitary, but I'm starting to reconsider whether I should get an other female to keep Kiki company. Thoughts on this?

Re:Playmates? - 2008/03/09 16:53 I have my girls together. They like to take turns on the wheel and sleep together. I don't know if they like to play together, but I definitely see a difference in one of the girls -- she seemed very sad before, but is full of life now that she's housed with other girls.

She was a rescue and was housed with another hedgehog until that other hedghog died. I believe she was without her friend for a few months before coming into my home, and she wasn't taken care of (tons of infected ingrown quills, LONG toenails, very dehydrated, had a cold, dirty, etc. etc). I kept her in her own cage for a few weeks while we rehabbed her and then moved her into the new cage with friends. I suppose her happy demeanor could be from making her feel better by taking care of her better, but I also feel her being with roommates made a big difference as well

I will say some mornings I come out to see their cage upside down -- all the bedding messed up, food everywhere, toys moved around, etc.....almost like they partied all night LOL.

I haven't had any problems with the girls getting along, but sometimes it doesn't work out, so I'd say if you got another female, you may still have to keep her separate, if Kiki doesn't like her. Hopefully things will work out though

Re:Playmates? - 2008/03/09 17:34 Not that I have much experience with hedgehogs, but I know that many girls can live together and be happy roomies!

The hard part is though, some hedgies just don't get along well with others, and some like each other in the beginning but then develop a dislike.

If you were going to try to get another, I would reccomend getting a whole other cage incase it doesn't work out, because we wouldn't want any hedgies getting hurt!

It's too bad you couldn't take a hedgie for a week and try it out, because you never know what could happen in the future.

I hope this helped!
