Some advice please!? - 2008/03/09 17:45
Hi, I know I have been posting a lot of questions and such, but you guys are soo helpful!!
Ok so I wanted to get an extra level on Tweetle's cage, and I went to petsmart and the only one they had was wire, here look:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753260&cp&kw=corner+look+out&origkw=corner+look+out&sr=1
I bought it along with some card board from AC Moore incase I need to Cover up the wire so his feet don't get hurt.
To me the holes look pretty small, I measured and they were 6mm by 7mm but some are a little smaller or a little bigger
So do you think that I should cover it up? Or cover just the base and not the ladder? Vice versa?
Please and thanks!! ~Felicia

lol, questions are a good thing. that is what this forum is for
I would suggest you cover up the level. I think it may be hard for him to get up the ladder if you cover up the holes with something slick. If you could put something on there that would give him more traction, that would be best

That is what my cage is made of. I went out and bought a VERY thick vellux blanket from the thrift store, washed it three times, slept on it for a week, and attached it to the wire. I thought about cardboard but if they pee it'll get really nasty, and make changing the liner more difficult. So i bought flat headed screws, washers, and bolts for cheap at the hardwear store. I use a dozed of them the secqure her liner to the wire. I can use less now that I know she doesn't try to get under the liner, but it's habbit.

If you can find coroplast (corrugated plastic) it would be easier to spot clean.

I agree with Ann- you could use corrugated plastic and then you would also be able to make sides to the ramp and platform so the hedgehog doesn't fall, which is important because of their clumsiness and lack of eyesight, especially with a level that may be high and dangerous for them to fall from.

This will sound crazy but it works. DUCT TAPE. Wrap it around the top level, do about 4 layers. It's washable, and gives the hedgehog a good grip. OF course it's not the latest in decor but it really does work. And now I think it even comes in different colors!

Sorry I guess I should have mentioned that earlier Sometimes sign shops or places like home depot carry corrogated plastic.

I've heard both good and bad about using duct tape on things so I think that depends on how careful you are when you put it on-especially the edges. I don't usually use it on hedgie stuff. But it does come in lots of cool colors

We took the whole cage apart and went over and over and over the bars until it was a sturdy surface with no sticky or sharp edges. My boyfriend finished it with a layer of clear tape so it wiped clean easily. I still have it, but it's not in use. At the time it served it's purpose well and kept little hedgie feet safe. It was the redneck hedgehog set up... lol
