I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 09:03 http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2811527&cp=2767038.2769317&pg=7&fbn=Taxonomy%7CHabitats+%26+Cages&searchSort=TRUE&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2769317&fbc=1&s=A-StorePrice-PET&parentPage=family&keepsr=1

I think this may be the best cage I've ever seen for my hedgehog.
He's been living in a guinea pig/rabbit cage that is a little on the small side and I've been wanting to upgrade recently as he's grown larger. While I was searching, I found that cage. I think it's perfect. Optional solid floor, so his feet won't get caught. And a private little hutch for him to go in - like a really big hide-away!

What do you guys think?
Yes, or no?

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 10:18 I wish I had an opinion for you!! I think you have to look at how far the spacing is in the wires and hedgies climb and I think he might be able to climb up the little squares. Believe me I'm no expert, but, maybe someone else could add a comment about it.

(the hutch is really beautiful and not too costly for what you are getting)

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 10:22 The wire is my only concern. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow. If the wiring is okay, I think I'll be making the purchase

I really thought it was beautiful too, and not costly at all, right in the price range I was hoping to spend.

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 10:26 This cage would not be suitable for a hedgehog. hedgehogs need a solid bottom to their cages (Not wire bottom) because they are prone to getting their feet caught between the bars. The wire bottom will also hurt their feet. If you would like a store bought cage for your hedgie try a superpets rabbit cage. I know a lot of other people on this forum use the superpets cages. Another option you could use is a C&C cage. Here is a great site describing how to make them!

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 11:50 I wonder how easy the wooden area is to clean and how it is finished. That would be my biggest concern. Ann

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 14:04 I like that it has a solid top to put your pog's things on. I had to pull out an old cabinet to store Beatrix's extra litter and liners and cage pieces-parts and take up space on the counter top for her food jars (great little cookie jars I found at Dollar Tree with screw tight lids). Her run-about ball is in a bowl (so it doesn't roll away) on a nearby table. Those little guys take up more space than you'd think. Mommy loves...

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 14:36 it may be just me, but it looks like the hide away house takes up quite a bit of usable space. it looks like it takes up almost half of the cage? and once you fit a wheel in the other half, how much space will be left over to add other little extras? say for instance if you wanted to add tubes or a litter box etc. and i agree with Ann, how is the wooden floor finished? urine can deteriorate wood if the wood isn't finished with a protective coating. just something to think about. Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 15:16 I'm with Ann on this one- this cage while it looks really cool, isn't really functional because of the material it's made out of. You can't really clean wood that isn't finished (like in furniture made for humans), or disinfect either. The bottom would have to be made out of something other than wood, finished or not. And what about if your hedgehog got mites? It would just suck to have to throw the cage away because of something like that. I had a wooden house for Cotton when I first got her, and she scratched it to pieces and LOVED to pee all over the walls. I really don't know why or how she managed that one... But the house was unfinished wood, so I ended up just getting rid of it because there was no way to clean it. *~*Steph*~*

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/15 16:50 I feel bad Jocelyn, but I think the wood/urine thing is a bad mix. On the bright side you should be able to get an awesome cage for $99. Check these out:

You may have to go over a little if you wanted the stand, but they look like good cages. I know there are some threads on this forum that have alot of examples of really great cages!

I just feel bad because, I know what it's like to have your heart set on something and then have it not turn out. I'm sure you will find the perfect home, for your hedgie!!

Those cages would have to have liners or something covering the wire bottem too. I recommend this cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753290&cp=2767038.2769317&view=all&fbn=Taxonomy%7CHabitats+%26+Cages&fbc=1&clickid=topnav_dropdown6_link6&parentPage=family&keepsr=1

I think the dr. foster's cages you can take the wire bottom out -- I saw these cages at a local pet store and it was FABULOUS. It has the legs on the bottom that are much taller than I would think, and had great amounts of space inside. I wonder if any of your local petstores would carry them? Drs fosters & smith says it would be ground shipping (ie expensive).

The cage from petsmart -- I have one, and it works awesome. The one draw about the other cage is the legs...and having them off the ground. I guess you could always put the cage on a table, but sort of defeats the purpose. lol.

And yeah, stay away from the wooden cage for urine/other messy reasons. Better yet, make yourself a C&C cage on the cheap -- I love mine! And as messy as they can get, everything wipes off the coroplast bottom, and you can make them in any dimension you want PLUS, you can build an extra row underneath to bring them off the ground and/or make storage for all their supplies (yes, they take TONS of space for their stuff...if you're anything like me buying them tons and tons of goodies and fleecies, etc. lol)

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/16 00:06 I just figured since it was a finished wood (as described on the product web page) and that it was meant for a rabbit, the urine wouldn't be an issue.

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/16 04:51 it seems a little small to me, also your hedgie wouldn't be getting very much light in there even during the day. for not much more you can get the largest marchioro cage

I looked it up and Drs. Foster and Smith has relatively inexpensive shipping.

$100.01-$130.00 was only $12.99
$130.01-$160.00 was only $13.99

Not bad ,Huh??

the measurements are based on the outer dimensions of the cage. not the inner dimensions. which can be almost a square foot of a difference. also as i posted earlier, how much usable space is there? take into consideration that the "hide away house" takes up a relatively large amount of space. and just because wood may have a protective coating, does not mean that urine will not eat away at it. a store bought cage with a plastic bottom is definitely a better decision. or better yet, a C&C cage.

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/16 15:25 I really like that Dr.'s Fosters and Smith cage...If I had money I'd spring for that for sure. However my C&C is plenty big and seems like it'll do well enough for my first pog. Mommy loves...

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/16 19:58 I didn't get the hutch. You guys all had a lot of great reasons and talked me out of it for sure.
PetSmart did have this cage though

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753342&cp=2767038.2769317&pg=6&fbn=Taxonomy%7CHabitats+%26+Cages&searchSort=TRUE&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2769317&fbc=1&s=A-StorePrice-PET&parentPage=family&keepsr=1

Which is a lot bigger than the cage he had and the 2nd level is a maybe. If worse comes to worse, it can be removed. The small stand is great too, as I don't need a table anymore and the dog loves seeing him, and he loves seeing the dog!

Re:I think I found the perfect home for my hedgie! - 2008/03/16 21:01 This cage is the same price, but it is bigger and that is better than having an extra level, I think.
