Too many lost? - 2008/03/16 18:19 Hi everybody!

Tweetle is about three months old and is quilling. He seems to be losing a lot lately though, I am holding him right now, and I have already found about 8 in my shirt...

Is it normal for him to be losing this many? I know that if a hedgehog has mites then the end of his quill doesn't have a little ball on it, but his do, so I don't think it is mites. (or atleast i hope not! )

Thanks!

Re:Too many lost? - 2008/03/16 18:26 Oh and to add to the quilling, is it going to be over soon? He is such a grump, and for the first time he just but me for trying to pick him up!

I know he is uncomfortable and stuff, so I want it to be over for both him and me!

Re:Too many lost? - 2008/03/16 20:18 Sometimes hedgehogs will lose one or two quills a day for a long period of time. Sometimes hedgehogs sneeze and are through quilling in a matter of minutes. Ok, SLIGHT exaggeration there. I was holding a quilling baby yesterday for about 30 minutes, and picked up somewhere in the area of about 30 quills. All hedgehogs have differences in their quilling, just like human babies teething. If he seems SUPER uncomfortable, a warm bath with a little bit of Aveeno type stuff can help soothe uncomfortable skin and make it easier for the quills to break through the skin. Good luck with your little one!

Re:Too many lost? - 2008/03/16 21:06 I'd say that can be normal, depending on the hedgie. When Cotton was quilling, she'd lose about three here and there. When Noodles was quilling, it was about the same amount, but with Cocoa it's like being in the middle of quill wonderland, seriously. Neither Cotton nor Noodles lost quills like she does, and she's just finishing up too thankfully. When I first brought her home, I swear it was like she'd leave a trail of quills wherever she went. In the morning I'd check on her, lift up her sleeping hut, and there'd be like 20 quills just in her sleeping area from that night! I wouldn't be worried if I were you *unless* you begin to notice a concentrated area of quill loss that begins to look like a bald patch- that may be a sign of mites, and is certainly not normal just for quilling. *~*Steph*~*

Re:Too many lost? - 2008/03/16 21:08 I've also heard from experienced hedgie owners that have had cases of mites that the ball is still on the end of the quill if there are mites. At least I am fairly certain of that. *~*Steph*~*

Re:Too many lost? - 2008/03/17 14:23 Could be. In the hedgehog primer I read that the ends would be ragged and have skin attached if it were to be mites, but that could just be in some cases. Thanks guys! **Mommy of Tweetle the hedgehog!**
