Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/15 16:06okay i know this topic has been posted numerous times, and i've researched a lot of them. not just on this site but on others as well. but i still have a few questions. what, in your experience, is best to use for liners? i've considered using flannel as a top layer, anti-pill fleece as a bottom layer. but do i need a middle layer? keep in mind omelette isn't 100% litter trained. and i've heard of using vellux as a middle layer. but i'm not sure what vellux is, and some people say it isn't good for hedgie's who like to dig. but if it's a middle layer does that matter?Lisa My Heart Belongs to: Teddy, Sugar, Sapphie, Fudge, Archie, Chuckie - The Yorkies Wendy (Siamese Mix), Echo (Tabby) - Cats Omelette - Hedgehog Basil - Guinea Pig

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/15 16:56I wish I could help but alas I'm the most untalented person I know!(well when it comes to sewing anyway.!!) I'm just replying that when I was reading your post I was like "what the heck is vellum??' It's nice to know I'm not the only one who said that !!
Can I ask why you want to use liners??What do you use now? Just curious, I use Care-Fresh and Hazel is always buried in it. So I wonder if she would be mad if I changed.LORI, SOUTHINGTON, CT Mom of: Chloe(dog), Mr.Toad(frog) and Hazel the hedgie!!

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/16 14:31as of now i'm using aspen shavings. but i'd like to use liners because they are more cost effective. and i HATE how messy shavings are! every morning i wake up to shavings all over the floor, and i have no idea how she managed to kick them out. i did consider switching over to Carefresh, but then figuring out how expensive it would be...well let's just say i would rather spend that money buying omelette's food. or saving it up in case of an emergency vet visit. *bump*Lisa My Heart Belongs to: Teddy, Sugar, Sapphie, Fudge, Archie, Chuckie - The Yorkies Wendy (Siamese Mix), Echo (Tabby) - Cats Omelette - Hedgehog Basil - Guinea Pig

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/16 15:22Oh! Finally I can be helpful! I have a vellux blanket for the liner in Beatrix's cage. It's very soft and hypoallergenic. I found mine on amazon.com for 21ish dollars (twin size; comes in lots of colors).
The only reason I even know what it is, is because my Nana used to have a blue one on her guest bed and another one my sister and I used to make "forts" out of when we played at her house.
I was unable to find this fabric at any of our hobby stores in Memphis, but you can get them at JC Penny's and off-line. I cut mine in half so that i have two double layers. It's sort of...velvety and sort of fleecey...hard to describe, but it is very soft and warm. I don't know how it would do for a digging pog...but I hope Bea likes hers.Mommy loves... Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/16 18:09I made mine out of 4 layers of fleece that I just cut to fit to my cage.
Fleece is good because it won't shrink, is cheap, and absorbant **Mommy of Tweetle the hedgehog!** ~Felicia :]

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/16 21:01I basically cut some fleece to size, sewed it together so it looks like a huge hedgie bag (meaning I left one end open), and it is two layers. I have potty trained hogs and a non-potty trained hog, and I find two layers is plenty enough to soak up any urine without things being all wet and damp and seriously it doesn't reek like other substrates have, at least IMO anyway. Because it's fleece, it's also really cozy and soft, plenty of cushioning for soft little hedgie paws *~*Steph*~* Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/17 16:54thanks so much everyone for your input! i really appreciate it! i've got some fleece scraps that i was hoping to use to make the liners. now that i know two layers is good enough, i'll have plenty to make a good amount of them. now i just need to go get started!...Lisa My Heart Belongs to: Teddy, Sugar, Sapphie, Fudge, Archie, Chuckie - The Yorkies Wendy (Siamese Mix), Echo (Tabby) - Cats Omelette - Hedgehog Basil - Guinea Pig

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/20 00:19I make and sew my own and I love them all. I usually use a nice flannel top with a cotton batting middle and a fleece or corduroy bottom. Sometimes I make it with a plain cotton top (I plan to use those during warmer months). Pee never seems to soak through and they clean up very well. One thing to keep in mind is the fabric color that you use. Always avoid red since it will hide blood. Lighter colors help because you can see when they need washing.Check out Ham's Blog !

Re:Making Your Own Liners? - 2008/03/20 23:18Yes that's the stuff. I usually use the thinnest one but sometimes I just use whatever I have on hand.Check out Ham's Blog !
