About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/18 14:09 I have a male and female Egyptian Long-Eared hedgehogs. Yesterday my female was bleeding from her vagina. I would like to know if this is a problem or if it is menstruation. I am worried.

The male has been sniffing behind her ever since though. I just want to make sure.

Thanks

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/18 14:39 I have a female and have never had this problem. I am not sure if female long eared hedgehogs are different though. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/18 18:47 Is the female pregnant? If she is, that can cause bleeding sometimes. She sheould not still be with the male either. Ann

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/18 20:48 If you house the male and female together and don't wish to breed, then you need to house them seperately. I would go to the vet if i were you. **Mommy of Tweetle the hedgehog!**

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/20 07:36 I have a question are you saying that there is blood on her female parts or on her lower back? If it is her lower back then I would guess that they have just mated as I have noticed with mine that after they are done mating there is a smug of blood on the females lower back where the male held on during his job.

Just my two cents but Ann is correct if they have been together any time then assume she is pregnant and get her away from that male before she miscarries from the stress or worse has the babies which he will then kill before trying to mate with the female again.

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/20 09:22 Hey there. She was actually bleeding from her female parts, I'm sure of that. It was only a little, but it was dropping around everywhere in blotches. I was worried about that, but she hasn't done it again since and seems fine.
I'm keeping her with the male at the moment and they seem to be much more close than usual now, but I don't think they've mated, as I would think it makes noise at night and I am keeping them in my bedroom.
And don't worry about the male attacking anyone as he's scared of his own shadow. LMAO.

How do I know if she's pregnant though, how do I make sure?

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/20 09:29 Ummmm I would just assume that she's pregnant....given that she's not an old girl....and that they've been together. I'm sure you get some sleep at night, so you're not up listening to them at all times. How long have they been together?

Also, its more an instinctual thing to hurt the babies....I think it has way less to do with their temperament.

I'd separate them now....

Re:About female hedgehogs - 2008/03/20 15:08 Not that I know too much about breeding, but from what I've read, it isn't based on the temperment of the male but just his presence could make the female stressed. I would seperate them immediately, and if you don't have another cage then perhaps move the male into a storage bin until you can get one. Many people make cages out of them and I'm sure you could ask somebody on this site about going about making it. **Mommy of Tweetle the hedgehog!**

You need to separate them right away. Some hedgehogs do not make ANY noise when they mate, and may not show any signs of mating either. It's likely that the bit of blood was from mating. You'll need to get her into her own cage, and give her a nest box.
There is no way to tell for sure that a hedgehog is pregnant without getting an ultrasound at the vet closer to her due date (generally 35 days after mating).
There are articles here on World about breeding, do read up and feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
DO separate them now. If she is pregnant, and delivers the babies around the male, it's not just him you have to worry about, most females will kill the offspring also.
