Super Worms... what's the deal? - 2008/03/09 22:29 Okay what's up with Super Worms. (Besides the obvious fact they seem to think they are better than average worms.)

I FINALLY saw some at Pet Smart. The lady opened the container and one actually reared up and shook it's little fang things at me. Petsmart carries them but advises against buying them. So why would anyone feed their pet a superworm? Are they more nutritious? Are they for hedgehogs who live on the wild side?

Someone PLEASE explain this to me!

Just thank your lucky stars that it wasn't a mature worm. You would know because the mature ones spit a green acid like poison that can be deadly if the anti-venom isn't administered in time. Thankfully PetSmart carries it for only $49.95!

But in all seriousness, I have no idea. I know some reptiles eat them, but I don't know the nutritional difference.

Re:Super Worms... what's the deal? - 2008/03/10 06:45 Yeah, you don't want to feed them to your hedgie because there is a good chance it will bite you or the hedgie and it hurts

The only way you can feed them is if you decapitate the worms, and I would personally not recommend trying

Re:Super Worms... what's the deal? - 2008/03/10 12:55 Superworms are fed hormones so that they grow much bigger than normal mealies and they never turn into beetles, so last longer.

They can bite quite hard, so shouldn't be fed live to a hedgie (hence the decapitating ), though to be honest I wouldn't want to feed mine them anyway. It's better just to stick to the normal mealworms.

Don't worry Emily. I would never give Harley anything like that. He thinks he's all tough, but I'd rather error on the side of caution. I was just wondering, the things seem rather wretched so why would anyone bother with them? I suppose they are a lizard thing.

They even look mean! It was kinda funny.

I'm not sure about the steriods part, but I do know that they are a different species. Tenebrio molitor is the darkling beetle that makes mealworms. Zoophobos morio is the superworm.

Re:Super Worms... what's the deal? - 2008/03/10 14:25 Eww!! Gahh I hate worms and expecially meal worms because they look all worm-ish. I am a wormaphobe~~Yes I made up a Phobia lol.

Anyways, Tweetle wont eat the freeze dried, and I am NOT getting live ones, so I guess he can live off of other treats. Those worms at the store sound sooo scary! Oh god I must sound like an idiot, they just gross me out!!

Anyways, I would say just stick with regular!

You are describing 'giant Meal Worms'.

Ya, you don't want to attempt to cut off their heads because that is when they go all 'Super' on you and open up a can of whoop a$$!

And yeah the giant mealworms are different from super worms, but nearly as bad since they are given hormones.

it still shocks me when someone from a younger generation doesn't know about particular movie, song, tv show, etc. that most of my generation grew up with. but to answer your question, "The Lost Boys" is a movie made in around '87 about vampires. well i might just go pop in the dvd right now...

OMG I AM SUCH A SILLY FAN GIRL. A friend got me the movie poster from Lost Boys. It's all red and has their silhouettes and says across the top, "Party all night, sleep all day, it's good to be a vampire!" I framed it and hung it in the tv room.

I think it started last summer maybe? Might be in season two? I only know this because I saw the ad for it on TV. Honestly I don't watch that much TV so I probably won't tune in for it. But The Lost Boys is good hedgehog viewing because of the Chinese Food/bug scene. Another favorite show for hedgies (if they watched TV) is that Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmerman... lots of bugs there too! lol.

SUPERWORM update... a friend of mine who keeps lizards says they are too dangerous to feed to most reptiles.. i suppose it's extreme snacking?!

But if you haven't seen the Lost Boys, go rent it, it's a great movie. No really..
