Lots o' food! - 2008/03/22 10:18
Hey All!
I have been poking around random hedgie info sites when I am bored. (Yes, I am a hedgie addict!! ) Anyways I came across a website that I really liked because it has alot of info so I bookmarked it incase I needed any info. I read on her site that she feeds her hedgehogs a large veriety of foods. The website wouldn't let me copy/paste (which was funny because when I tried it said "Spicket says it's not nice to copy all of mama's hard work!) Which I don't blame her for the site rocks! Here is the link to her site, look at the diet she feeds her hedgehogs!

Should I start doing that or stick with catfood? Just wondering?

Hi I have put a few of my hedgies on a whole food diet fairly similar to what Laura has on her website. Basically wild hedgehogs eat all kinds of protein and berries they find in the wild. The diet I have been using and am still developing is as follows:
- cooked chicken, cooked salmon, lean meats - BUGS! mealies, waxworms, crickets, sugar ants, etc - blueberries - a few drops of Halo which has amino acids to help with what I like to call "the hedgehog itchies" aka hedgie dry skin. - Ferretvite
I dont add a lot of vegetables and fruits other than blueberries because hedgehogs dont eat asparagus, carrots, etc in the wild. They are all about protein. They do eat berries so I do include the blueberries.
What I have found so far- 1) They all love the diet 2) If you have a lot of hedgehogs, it is very time consuming and expensive. 3) Storage and freshness of the food is an issue. I have begun using a food dehydrator to help maintain self life. I have also purchased freeze dried chicken livers which are about 25.00 for a tub of it to help add to the diet.

I did not know that hedgehogs like blueberries. Hmmmm, I have some on hand right now and I'm wondering if I should give Spikey a blueberry tonight as a treat.

Well like Andrea I didn't know about the blueberries and I tried to give some to everyone but no one ate them or even licked them. They just nosed them out of the food dish and went back to eatting their Romaine Lettuce and Kibble and wormies. LOL Hedgies Go Figure!!!!

i'm actually really interested in feeding my hedgie a whole food diet. i'm currently trying to transition my dogs and cats. but since there isn't enough information on hedgehog nutrition, i think i'll stick to the cat food for now. well at least until Julie has perfected her formula! oh and Omelette won't eat blueberries. actually the dogs and the cats won't eat them either.

Hazel hasn't touched blueberries yet, but if i come across the sour ones (and I eat pounds of them when they are in season !) my dog Chloe will eat 'em for me!! I think she thinks as long as Mom tosses 'em at me I'm gonna eat 'em!!

Re:Lots o' food! - 2008/03/26 10:59
Spikey took a nibble of the blueberry and then left the rest. I wonder if I cut the blueberry in half would that make a difference. Spikey also ate a little cooked chicken I presented to him but then left the rest. He eats his kibbles with gusto, though LOL. I think he is being more grumpy the last few days--partly due to changing his hedgie bag (he really does not like it when I do this) and I think partly due to delayed grumpiness with quilling. His poops are normal and I spied on him last night and he was very active.
Stasi, so far I have seen Spikey annoint himself twice (the first time was when I called you) but I think he has done it more because one morning he came out and the top of his head looked like dried something and I could tell it was some kind of annointing that had dried on the top of his head.

It sounds like it Andrea! Maybe he's holding out on the annointing for something really *good* I imagine that's just fine with you though
For anyone who's interested in seeing annointing with their hedgie, I recommend trying an Altoid mint...seems to work about 98% of the time.

Satin anoints 100% of the time with sweet potato. You'd think she'd be used to it by now and treat it as a food. But no; I just get a orange-quilled hedgie

When your hedgehog annoints with sweet potato are you supposed to wash it off? I read the chapter on annointing in the primer but I am wondering if there is anything I am supposed to do if Spikey annoints with something like that?

You could leave it on the hedgehog for a bit with no harm but it drives me nuts when they are covered in something so I wipe it off with a wet rag or baby wipe... much to Harley's utter disgust when he's found something he thinks is REALLY great.

What Halo product do you use? I know it's a holistic brand that makes dog and cat foods- but I'm not sure what you're referring to here. I'd love to do a home made diet for my hogs, but I don't know what other kinds of vitamin supplements to add in for them. I've heard of people adding in Chitin supplements (which is what is found in insects) but I've yet to find it, and Ca supplements. Do you just mash this all together and serve or do your hogs like to eat it piece by piece?
I'd love to know more if anyone has any good links

i'd like some more info on this too! i'm interested to know how much of what you put in. and i'm curious to also know which Halo product you use. what does it contain that helps with hedgie skin? does it have Omega 3 or some kind of oil? i actually wanted to try and put some salmon oil in Omelette's food to help with her skin, but i don't know if that would be okay. and i'm not sure on the right amount. or is there something else that would help?

I'd like to make the diet that I feed Tweetle a little more complex... but probably not as much as she has on her website because I don't think I could do all that! I am currently feeding Kelly's food... anything I should maybe add to that?

Laura is an amazing wealth of knowledge. It is from here site where I originally learned a lot about hedgehogs. I haven't been on her site in a while, but I'm pretty confident in whatever she recommends on her site.
