How do I stop a Climber? - 2008/03/29 07:34 I've had my boy for a week now and I have discovered that he LOVES to climb on just about anything. He toppled his wheel over, climbed up the couch and he climbs up his wire sided cage. He seems almost obsessive about it.

I have the wire top secured both on the bottom ( attached to the plastic bottom ) and the top opening has been clipped shut.
My main concern is that, once he reaches the top and realizes he has no where to go, he may fall and injure himself.

I had thought that the plastic bottom was high enough to prevent him from climbing but, I've come to realize that hedgies are little Houdini's. Does anyone else have this problem, or any tips on keeping him safe? If anyone has help on getting him to stop completely ( haha ), that would be great!

Re:How do I stop a Climber? - 2008/03/29 11:01 I'm really new to hedgehogs, too, so I don't have much advice... but maybe if you put another level on his cage he will climb there instead of up on the cage... Or you could try to put something else higher than the plastic so he can't get up... Just an idea!

I know my hedgie Tweetle tried climbing up the side of his cage once when I was watching him and fell! On the bright side though, he never climbed up it again!

As for the climbing all over you, he ovbiously likes to move around rather than being held, get a playpen for him!

Hope this helped, and please post some pictures for us to see!

Re:How do I stop a Climber? - 2008/03/29 11:43 Levels may work, or at least distract him a little

I was wondering if I somehow managed to attach a plastic wall to the wire if that would be suitable? I'm just tossing some ideas out there.

Re:How do I stop a Climber? - 2008/03/29 13:20 If the cage isn't very tall, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have a lot of climbers around here (quietly mumbles "spider hog, spider hog, nothing can stop that spider hog") and it is rare that a hedgehog would injure themselves with a very short drop. If you are worried about it, you can get some cloroplast (corrugated plastic, sold in sign stores) and ziptie it to the inside of the cage. You will have to go almost all the way to the top of the cage (I had a girl that was capable of getting over a barricade that was almost 18 inches tall) which will solve the climbing issue, but make it difficult to see into the cage.

Re:How do I stop a Climber? - 2008/03/29 14:54 Thank-you.
The cage isn't very tall at all, I'm just being a little over-protective I guess.
Dingo is my first hedgehog, he's like my little prickly baby and I want him safe.
