Great book - 2008/04/01 15:23
I just received a book I ordered from Ebay. It's called The Cult Of The Hedgehog. I bought it for just $5 and it's valued at $35 or $40. I can't wait to read it. It has over 150 pages and great color photos. I believe the seller had one more if anyone else is interested.

WARNING!!!!! The photos in the Cult of the Hedgehog by Kelsey Woods book are great, but the information is mostly garbage.
Sorry to rain on your parade, I do love some of the photos too!

The info I read so far is pretty accurate. Why do you say it's garbage? It was only printed in 97.

Re:Great book - 2008/04/02 20:59
I don't have any personal knowledge of this specific book, but because pet hedgehogs are relatively new (began in the early 1980's) there has been a large amount of misinformation that is printed and is printed in the 1990's. I have several of these informational books and although the dates may be relatively recent, our knowledge has expanded far past what has generally been published.

Oh well. I will still read this book and continuing researching and learning new things about hedgies on here. I am fairly new to hedgehogs as of last summer, so any knowledge that I get is beneficial to me.

Re:Great book - 2008/04/03 13:12
That's fair. With the Kelsey-Woods books, yes, the print date is 1997, however, it's recycled old stuff from his earlier books (unfortunately, there are a number). Just be sure to take the whole thing with huge heaping of salt. If you run into things that are different than you thought you knew, or that seem at all weird, just holler, there are enough people here to help with any contradictory information.
If anyone is looking for a good quality, accurate hedgehog book - The Hedgehog Primer by Antigone Means (Hedgehog Valley) is full of wonderful information. I may be mistaken, but I *think* she was mentioning that the new publisher can do them in color too. Tig, Becca, anyone?

Re:Great book - 2008/04/03 13:38
I haven't been impressed by Kelsey-Woods books either. I haven't personally seen the Cult, but I have one of his older books, and have been told that the majority of the information is almost exactly the same. The pictures are great. The information... well.....
Kelsey- Woods had books on hedgehogs released in 94, 96, and 97 I think. Along with a bazillion books on other species, from birds to fish to small mammals to puppies. I have seen some less than glowing reviews of his other books by owners and breeders of other species, as well, so he isn't just outdated on the hedgehogs. Becca

Re:Great book - 2008/04/04 17:10
I bought the Hedgehog Primer from Stasi before I adopted Spikey and I am so glad that I read the whole thing before Spikey even came home because it gave me advanced information about annointing. Had I not read about it, I think I would have freaked out seeing Spikey annoint himself. In fact, he ended up with a crown of foam on the top of his head!
I still refer to the book and it really helped with the behavioral parts of adjusting. It is an excellent resource.

How many pages is the Hedgehog Primer? Is it a hard or soft back and in color? Also, is Tig from Hedgehogvalley the only person who sells it?

Tig is the author and sells it on her site. Other breeders also may have it available.

My first hedgehog book, the one I picked up in 1996!, is by Dawn Worble or Warble? I wonder if she's still in hedgehogs or if anyone has heard of her in the past few years?

~Sara Dawn Wrobel retired a few years ago. I have some hedgies who's pedigrees go back to her, she certainly made a mark in the hedgie communities. (and her book, for it's age, was great)
