Balls - 2008/04/02 19:21 What are people opinion on exercise balls? Lychee seems to have settled in. He loves his wheel, although he seems to dislike his business hitting him in the face as he tends to get off to do it when he knows it’s coming! When we get him out he’s started being a lot more exploratory when he’s come round which is a problem in our front room as he could get hurt if he darts for under the couch or behind the furniture. The largest ball I could find was a 11.5 inch diameter Chinchilla ball, are these suitable? A lot are coloured, would this be a problem?

Sorry just had a look back and it seems they’re fine to use them (guess it’s up to Lychee if he’s interested or not). In the UK I’ve not seen any with a hedgehog on so it’s just the size I need to work out, would 11.5” be a good size? And does it matter if they’re coloured (although I think I’d prefer him to have a clear one) I think it said it was suitable for guinea pigs.

Re:Balls - 2008/04/03 09:55 From what I've read here and in other places, there seems to be a lot of debate about hedgies & balls. Pros include hedgies being able to run around more than they would without a ball. Cons include hedgies pooping/peeing in their balls and concerns over sufficient ventilation and the possibility of getting a toe or toenail stuck in one of the ventilation holes.

Personally, I think you have the right idea: try it out (closely supervised) and see if it works with your hedgie. A guinea pig sized ball should be the right size.

Re:Balls - 2008/04/04 00:12 I bought a critter ball for Omelette. I used to let her run around in it when I first got her. I wanted to let her have run of the house, but was worried about the cats and dogs "attacking" her. Now that I've realized that neither the cats or dogs are interested in her, I let her run around in her play pen. The only problem I had with the ball was if she peed in it, then it would drain out of the holes onto the carpet.

But I'd say try it out. Some hedgies don't even care much for the balls and won't run in them. Oh and the 11.5" one is the one that I have. Lisa

Re:Balls - 2008/04/04 03:13 Like she said some hedgies don't like them. Kiki loves her's. She likes to explore without me hovering inches over her. In the ball i watch from the couch, without the ball i'm no more then a foot from her at all times. I made the mistake of getting the 13'' ball which is slightly too big for her. She runs anyway. The 11'' ball ball would have been a better fit, being that kiki is one of those small hedgehogs. If your baby looks like he could be on the large side then I woud reccomend the 13".

Re:Balls - 2008/04/06 19:04 Ham hates his exercise ball. If I put him in it he almost always 99% will poo/pee right off the bat. He never poos/pees ANYWHERE else outside of his cage otherwise (so I guess that's a good thing?). Besides that, I think I've seen him manage to move about a total of three feet over the past 6 months. But yeah... I think he's slightly unusual. Check out Ham's Blog !
