Stinky? - 2008/04/03 13:01 Hey guys! I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new hedgehog but I am wondering if hedgehogs tend to be smelly. I know rodents and ferrets tend to have a pretty nasty odor (I can barely walk in to animal facilities here because it smells so bad no matter how much they are cleaned). Do hedgehogs have a similar odor problem or will they be not so smelly if I clean her cage often enough.

thanks!
Becky

Re:Stinky? - 2008/04/03 13:10 IMO, a hedgehog with a clean cage and wheel has basically no smell. Their poops can be pretty smelly when freshly deposited, but the smell goes away fairly quickly.

Re:Stinky? - 2008/04/03 15:17 Yep, that's my finding too. Hedgie's don't produce body odor. The only stinkiness can come from there poos and pee.

As you might imagine, the stinkiest time is early morning when your hedgie has been wheeling all night long. Just pull out the wheel and whatever you're using directly under the wheel to clean, give your hedgie a footbath if s/he has poopyfoot, and all should be pretty darn stink-free.

Re:Stinky? - 2008/04/04 03:33 Yeah the wheel tends to be the source of stink. If you clean the wheel every night then the "waste" smell does ot cling to the hedgie. If you skip cleaning and you have a hedgie that likes to run the smell gets strong pretty quickly.

Re:Stinky? - 2008/04/04 09:08 I agree. Hedgehogs will not have much of a defined smell if their cage is cleaned regularly. Freshly deposited poops will smell a little bit, but then who's doesn't?! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777
