I need help finding a good Hedgehog food - 2008/04/07 14:38 I am going to be a new mommy to a hedgie in a week. I have been doing my research and want to try to stay clear of cat food as a primary source of nutrition but I also don't want to use the food provided by the breeder for long since it is pretty expensive (Exclusively Hedgehogs Select Diet). I know what ever I do end up choosing, I will have to wean the hedgie off of the select diet, but I don't know what to choose to replace it.

What hedgehog food is good or should I suck it up and stick with Exclusively Hedgehogs Select Diet?

Re:I need help finding a good Hedgehog food - 2008/04/07 14:56 I use a mix of Purina Cat Chow Healthful Life, Iams Healthy Naturals and Chicken Soup For The Cat Lovers Soul. My hedgie loves this mix. I have not found an actual hedgehog food in stores that is of good quality that I would feed my hedgehog. Good luck! ~Erin~

Re:I need help finding a good Hedgehog food - 2008/04/07 15:39 I buy my food from Stasi, who is one of the moderators; she is the breeder that sold me my hedgie. The food is not expensive and she has a scientific explanation of the make-up of the food. A lot of the other breeders on this board, who are also moderators, sell food and the prices are consistent with Stasi (so I am assuming it is the standard going rate.

I think most of them ship, too. You can then supplement with little treats, like poached chicken, yam, green pepper.......other people will probably have suggestions regarding kinds of treats. I have done chicken, apple and a blueberry.

Most hedgehog foods out there aren't very good. The select diet is one of the better ones.

The breeders have found that a mix of high protein low fat cat and kitten foods works well.

Re:I need help finding a good Hedgehog food - 2008/04/08 00:29 Is there a particular reason you want to stay away from cat food? Food made especially for hedgehogs is not nutritionally balanced. Most contain fillers. Cat food has been found to be the best food that is nutritionally complete for hedgehogs. Buying a food mix from a breeder is the best way to go, since it takes the guess work out of preparing it yourself. It's also a lot cheaper too. Lisa
