Noises - when and why? - 2008/04/13 06:11
I was just wondering what noises your hedgehogs make? And when they started making noises other than hufypuffy.
Lychee usually just makes noises to show us he's annoyed. Mostly it's huff and puff. He does a spitting noise when he doesn't want to be interrupted exploring. Once, he tried to hibernate and as I warmed him up and massaged him, he looked up at me and did a little cry/whimper like he was calling for his mommy. What was that noise all about? (The cage temperature is regulated like fort knox now, no more worries there.)
My boyfriend has heard him whirr a few times, but i haven't. Lychee certainly prefers my boyfriend over me - it's a man thing, i think. Do you have to socialise him a lot or just be really close to him before he'll make happy noises?
I'm just wondering what noises everyone's hedgehog makes and how far along during the socialisation process did it take to hear a variety of sounds?
Am I just not listening carefully? I have a problem hearing high/soft noises e.g. i can't hear whispering on tv.
Thanks for your input!

Hi there! I have definately heard the huff/puff noises and these are usually paired with the forehead quills over the face. I have also heard a noise that sounds like.....it is hard to describe but it is when he is in exploration/curious mode and is doing A LOT of sniffing. It sounds like a low "woof"ing (not like a dog LOL). He also vibrates a bit when he is doing this; I assume he is really excited and full of energy when this happens. I dont know if this is the purring that others have described; it does feel a bit like purring but there is a distinctive sound. Sometimes I also hear a little high pitched squeeking sound that proceeds the huff/puff.
As far as where we are at in terms of socialization; well, we are still bonding and I got him at the end of February.
I have slight hearing loss, too.

My boyfriend says he can hear Ava make little squeaks when she's excited and exploring but like you, I have some hearing difficulties. I have scar tissue on my ear drums from chronic childhood ear infections so really high pitched noises are harder for me to hear.
She makes huff/puff sounds and a sound that sounds like a "pop" when the cat tries to sniff her. But she is really quiet. She does purr which I can't hear (Carlo claims he's heard her) but I only feel her do it when she's asleep in my lap.

I have yet to hear Omelette purr. Or even feel a vibration. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention? I've had her since December '07. So not too long, but enough time that we've bonded. When I first got her, she did not care much to be picked up. So she would make quick huffing sounds. Kinda like, "huffhuffhuffhuff", and would ball up if I persisted. But now she just makes a "puff........puff" sound whenever I wake her up. Otherwise she's pretty quiet.

i had heard my hedgie make a low grumbling sound, like a tiny motor, when she is excited/ really happy. I think that this might be a purr. She also makes a very high pitched sound when she is scared, mostly in the bath. She has also made the "hedgie scream of death" when she got a toilet paper tube stuck on her head one time.

HAHAHA... Carlo heard Ava make the hedgie scream of death when she got a TP tube stuck on her head once, too! Still hasn't stopped her from running around with them on her head though.

Hazel does huffing and puffing and clicking noises but the funniest noise, in my humble opinion, is when it's really really quiet and she's just waking up. I can hear noises like she's smacking her lips, or maybe it's more like her mouth tastes bad after a long sleep. "smack, smack smack!"

YES I have heard the smacking of lips, too. I have told my husband "it sounds like he is licking or smacking his lips". He is usually in his hedgie bag when I hear this noise but yesterday he was stretched out long on my lap, face kindof hidden, and I heard the noise. I am not sure what is going on with this. Maybe it is a tongue thing?

I was wondering that same thing. They have those big tongues, maybe they don't know what to do with them sometimes! Or maybe they just like making little smacking noises!

I was so shocked when one day, like the first week in owning Spikey, I saw him yawn and it was a full view of his tongue and mouth. MY GOODNESS I did not know they had such long tongues. I was shocked. So maybe their tongues just make noises due to being so big. Gives a whole new meaning to tongue-tied LOL.

Lychee’s Dad here, I heard him whirr once when I let him roam the bathroom but he tends not to now, he just checks everything is where he saw it last and goes behind the sink (although I don’t let him now as it’s hard to clean back there and last time he came out with a spider web on his face so I guess we lost a housespider!). Oh and I let him tip the worm container up which he huffed at because worms fell on his head but then made a very excited whirr noise as he realised what they were. Oh and he sometimes makes a VERY high pitch noise (like the one just before the one you can’t hear on a hearing test) but not in any particular situation. Noises are few and far between though!

I was wondering the same thing. There are always the normal huffing sounds and yesterday I moved her food dish while she was eating (silly me) and she freaked out and rolled into a ball and huffed and shook very loudly. Ohh she was so mad at me. It was kind of funny.
But there was this one time Friday night I was sitting watching tv with my boyfriend and she was sitting on his beer belly and all of a sudden she made a little squeak sound and then stuck her head under his arm. I think it might have been a happy sound but I couldn't tell!
ps. that was the first night she met my boyfriend and she liked him right away and never balled or huffed at him or anything. He just walked in and scooped her up never even seeing a hedgehog before and she walked all over him and then snuggled with him. Ooooh I am so jealous!

Ava is a flirt too... Took her to petsmart once and the girl in the fish section wanted to hold her so I said ok and Ava pressed up against her belly, made a big sigh and fell asleep! The girl was petting her like a dog and she just slept away... Flirts, the whole lot of them I'm telling you

Omelette is a HUGE flirt. She enjoys my male friends petting her, and holding her. Usually she gets settled in and takes a nap. But if one of my female friends tries to hold her, Omelette does not want any part of it. She tries to run away, and starts huffing and puffing. I have no idea where she gets these flirtatious tendencies...

Re:Noises - when and why? - 2008/04/17 08:23
Last night I woke up around 2:30am to use the bathroom so I thought I would check on Spikey, using a small flashlight. He was awake and moving about. Anyway, he must have been aware of me because he started making this low pitched but loud, consistent sound, kindof like "wuwuwuwuwuwuwuwu". His quills were flat and he seemed excited/energized. I dont know if this was the purring that people have described or something totally different. Since I was up, I set up his large play pool and put him in that and he was running and burrowing under the towel I put down. This morning at 6:30am he seemed beat--like he wore himself out. It was the easiest administration of his meds yet LOL. His face was so cute, like "I am sleepy mommy, go away."
I dont know if anybody else has spied on their hedgie in the middle of the night. It was kindof cool to see him. Another interesting thing, my husband got up and turned on the hall light to check on me with Spikey, well Spikey froze in his tracks and stayed motionless--I guess the light did that. Once it was dark he started to move again, but not right away.

My hedgie's cage is right in my bedroom, so I always see her at night if I roll over or get up to go to the bathroom. She is always running around as fast as she can, or running around with a tube on her head.

Hedgehog tongues are amazing! Where do they keep it all?
Yes hedgies can be SUCH flirts. When I first got Isabel she fell for my boyfriend. She purred for him and let him pet her. When I picked her up she would keep her quills down for me but she wouldn't be affectionate. When we broke up and she realized he wasn't coming over anymore, Isabel gave me the cold shoulder for nearly a month!
When Isabel (she passed Sept 07) met my current boyfriend she worked hard to let him know she was here first and she was keeping an eye on him. It was so funny. I got Harley in December and he plays with Darran but poops on him every chance he gets. He's litterbox trained but he will WAIT for Darran to pick him up then let loose. Last week I wanted to take Harley to the park in his little carrier but wanted him to do his business before we left. Darran said, "Let me hold him and he'll go." He didn't have Harley for 30 seconds before the mess started! He held him over his litter box and the nice carrier stayed clean.
Harley purrs when he is chasing a meal worm and sitting on my shoulder playing with my hair. Don't feel bad if you've never heard your hedgie purr. It will happen just give it time.
~Sara
Oh and I LOVE to spy on Harley at night. He's so cute when the light comes on. He just freezes no matter what he's doing and stares at me as if to say, "Turn off that freaking light! Geeze lady!"
