Re:Worms...??? - 2008/04/16 23:49
Waxworms are larvae of wax moths. "They are medium white caterpillars with black tipped feet and small black heads. In the wild they live as nest parasites in bee colonies and eat cocoons, pollen, and shed skins of bees, and chew through beeswax, thus the name. When used in captivity they can go a long time without eating, particularly if kept refrigerated. Captive wax worms are generally raised on a mixture of cereal grain and honey." - Wikipedia They are extremely high in fat, so I wouldn't recommend feeding them to hedgehogs. The main reason most people don't feed live superworms to their hedgehogs, is because the head of the superworm needs to chopped off. If the superworm is eaten alive and not entirely chewed, there is the threat of the worm eating it's way out of the stomach. It's best to stick with small mealworms.
