How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/17 16:28 Hey! I was just wondering how everyone picked their name for their hedgehog.

Peanut got her name because the day that I was supposed to pick her up I found out that my grandfather was in the hospital. He kept calling me peanut and when I found out he wasn't going to make it I named her that. Now every time I look at her I remember how much I was loved.

Does anyone else have a nice story about their hedgehog's name?

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/17 21:40 I am a mathematician and so I decided to give my hedgie a math inspired name. I talked names over with my boyfriend and we decided that Digit was a good name! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 00:36 Unfortunately, I don't have a great story related to my hedgie's name. I just have this weird fascination with naming things after food. It all started with a Pac Man frog I named Pancakes (because he was shaped like a pancake). So one day my boyfriend and I were talking over names of animals that we would some day like to have. We started thinking of other breakfast type names. Hence, Omelette for our hedgehog. Lisa

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 04:06 Actually Ms. Pickles used to be Mr. Prickles until the kids and teachers at the preschool who had Pickles before I got her discovered that he was in fact a she. LOL. Not exactly sure where the name Pickles came from. I guess the kids liked it and who I'm I to change her name! I like it! ~Erin~

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 08:31 Before my little one was born... even before she was conceived... people kept asking me what I would name my hedgehog. I kept telling them that I hadn't picked out a name and wasn't going to pick out a name before I even met him or her.

But they kept asking. I explained that I'd need to meet the hedge and get to know him/her first otherwise I'd end up choosing a name like "Speedy" only to find out that the hedge just sat there. Picking up on that logic, one of my friends mentioned that I couldn't very well name a hedgehog "Satin" given all those quills.

Months passed and my baby was born. By then, I had been turning a bunch of different names over in my head... Satin being one of them.

Weeks passed and I was able to pick her up from her breeder. I still wasn't sure of her name, but I seriously toyed with "Satin." Within the week, I decided she was indeed "Satin" - her tummy was nice and soft and satin-like.

"Satin Mirranda" actually. Mirranda being my friend's name... the friend who said I couldn't very well name a hedgehog Satin.

But "Satin Mirranda" sounded a bit like the name of an adult entertainer. So I started thinking of a last name based entirely on my observations of my new little hedgie-girl. "Koosh" was one possibility - you know, after those toy balls; but "Hufflepuff" seemed to describe her better.

Thus "Satin Mirranda Hufflepuff" was named.

Though, sometimes, I call her Miss Poop-a-loop for all her running and pooping in the wheel.

That is a GREAT hedgie name. I love Omelette's too! I've noticed a few hedgehogs have egg names. I've had four hedgehogs over the past ten years and have gotten most of their names from baby names websites.

My 1st hog Bartleby, he was outgoing and unique so his name suite him. We called him Bartles.

Chole, a female albino, I rescued from a petshop. She hated everyone and everything except the vacuum cleaner! I guess her name fit.

Isabel's name started out as Isabella. I had her at the vet the day after I got her for a checkup and the assistant commented that was a BIG name for a little girl and I agreed and shortened it. Mostly we just called her IZ, the greatest nickname ever!

Harley, my current hedgie, I got him last December from a wonderful breeder I met here! I fell in love with his baby pictures and just had a feeling he was Bad to the Quill... in a good way and I was right! He's a darling but lives for adventure!

A few people have come down on me for daring to use people names for my hedgehogs. They said it was inappropriate and a pet should have a pet name like Spike, Spot or Brownie. And of course their opinions of me plummeted even lower when they found out my Beta fish's name is SUSHI!

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 11:37 Wow, there's a lot of creative names out there. I named Aragorn after the character in Lord of the Rings, because when I was watching him in the car on the long drive back home, he looked like he was wearing a cloak when he poked his head out of his blanket. That and I was (and still am) a fan of Tolkien's books. Pets:
Timmy (M, neutered) and Smokey (F, spayed) the maine coon and something else rescue cats.
Aureus (Unknown, called He) the goldfish.
Pepper (F) and Briar (M) the hissing cockroaches.
4 Minnows, rescued from being live bait.
4 House crickets, the other 3 are MIA.

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 11:39 I fell to reverse psychology. What name should you give a shy, grumpy, recluse? Something rediculously cute! I wanted a name that would reinforce cute and snuggly. That, and my boyfriend and I watch way too much Anime. I was struck by all the cute little names the girls would give thier flying squirrels. So, Kiki it was. She was almost named Momo. I felt like Kiki was a little edgier.

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 19:04 I still don't know how Dingo wound up with his name. I was thinking of naming him "Prickles" or "Shadow", simply because those were things I thought of when I saw his picture online.

When I met him however, those names were instantly dropped and for some strange reason, I kept thinking "The dingo ate your baby??" and... he became Dingo the hedgehog

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/18 20:17 My first hedgehog was given to me with the name of Van Gogh. Problem was, he was a she, so the name warped into Vanna Gogh. The name was appropriate for a hedgehog missing a large percentage of one ear (do we need to go into the practicality of eartagging hedgehogs?). My second hedgehog was Edgar Allan Poke (aka Edgar) my third was Chopin. I figured I had my fine arts covered, and could quit at that point. Har har har, yeah right. In the years since then, my hedgehog name book has exploded, including such names as Talulah Belle, Caminho Mata (means roadkill, he lived his life in a splatted position, seemed appropriate) Jaws (do we need to explain this one?) and the soon to be recieved Duckie the Indiscriminate Pooper (hey, I figured out how to spell that word!)

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/19 12:12 Let's see here... Cotton was named such because when we went to the breeder, it was either her sister or her. Her sister was a real grump butt, so of course we picked Cotton who crawled (and pooped!) all over us! Thus compared to her sister, she was as soft and cuddly as Cotton . My dad calls her Q-ball... Kind of like Q-tip + cotton ball combined.

Noodles well... He's the color of cooked pasta, whaddaya expect? .

Cocoa was almost named Eggroll, but we decided against it because it just didn't seem to fit her right. Her mask was very dark brown, the darkest I'd see IRL so we settled on Cocoa .

I have a few names picked out for future hedgies though- I'd love to name a little boy Tank and Koosh is also a favorite. We have some good boy names stacked up, but it's hard coming up with girl names for some reason.
*~*Steph*~*
Cotton, Noodles & Cocoa (hedgehogs), Kuruku & Kimiko (kittehs), Sushi & Lily (Ryukin Goldfish), Rosy & Ruby (beagle sisters), and Archie & Rocky (African Dwarf Frogs).

Re:How did you name your hedgehog - 2008/04/19 14:23 Well, when I went to Stasi's the first time and she put my future hedgehog in the palm of my hand (he was so small to me) he immediately did the forehead quills thing and stayed that way. So I was just holding and looking at a tiny bundle of spikes. I was trying to reassure him so I just started calling him "Spikey".

Fortunately the second visit went better!

I love all of the names mentioned so far.
