Dew Claw - 2008/04/18 07:01 I was wondering if you have to clip a hedgie's dew claw. I noticed that my hedgie's dew claw is getting a little long, but I am not sure if I should trim it or not. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:Dew Claw - 2008/04/18 08:38 I recall reading on one of the boards that someone had to clip their hedgie's dew claw.

I do look at my girl's dew claw when I'm doing the rest of her nails. And have always figured that IF it started growing long, I would have to trim it. So far, I haven't had to.

Re:Dew Claw - 2008/04/18 08:56 Just treat it like any other nail on the hedgehog - when it gets long, clip it. Stasi

Re:Dew Claw - 2008/04/18 10:06 If you don't clip it, it will grow around it's self until the claw is shaped like a little circle and eventually push into their leg which causes pain and an infection. Stasi's right it needs trimming too. But it seems to grow much slower than the other nails, thank goodness for that. Isn't it amazing how much hedgie front paws resemble hands? I've always referred to their dew claw as their little thumbs. LOL

It is a little claw that is further up on the leg. It is almost like a hedgie thumb.
