Feeder - 2008/04/14 21:16 What are everyone's comments on this feeder? I would be using the mix that Stasi sells if that helps any.

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/15 07:59 That looks kinda neat.

I have a waterer that works on the same principle. One thing to keep in mind is that the kibbles most likely won't fill the black bowl part. The food level will end up pretty close to however low the clear plastic/food holding unit's lower lip is. So I'd check to make sure that your hedgie has enough room to fit his/her head down in there (kinda hard to tell the dimensions from the pic). And that the edge/lip of the black bowl part is low and smooth enough that hedgie doesn't have to stand in an awkward position to get the food and it's not ouchy.

ETA:
I just clicked on the reviews... looks like it might be a tight fit. One reviewer noted, "I would have given it a five but the bowl part was too small for my rats to fit their heads into." Another stated, "My one problem with it, is that the bowl portion of the feeder (the part the guinea pig feeds out of) is MUCH too small and gets clogged with empty shells as he eats etc.. "
I think if you can get your hands on one, rather than just the pic, you might be able to make a better judgment.

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/15 09:41 We had something similar for the cats. I don't think I would ever use it for the hedgehogs because they will poop in their food dish at times which means you would have to clean it out very often and that sort of defeats the purpose of an auto feeder. Ann

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/18 10:59 Personally, I like putting her food in a small feeding dish. It makes it easier to monitor if she's eating enough on anygiven night. Another concerne is that some hedgies tend to eat like dogs. Will eat and eat. If your baby has a propensity to obesity it's giving her open access to just keep eating.

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/18 11:16 I agree with mschwindt. Hedgehogs have the ability to get very fat and this might encourage that. The feeder might work well if you had a herd of female hedgehogs in one cage.

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/18 12:19 Was just reading about the hedgies who will eat, eat, eat...

Does anyone restrict how much kibble their hedgies have in a day? And how's that going?

Re:Feeder - 2008/04/18 14:17 I put a limited amount of food in. About two tablespoons. I know that it's enough because she leave the l'avian kibbles behind and if she were hungry she would eat them. I really wish she would eat them because they are so vitimin enriched. Probably the same thing that makes them yucky. eew vitamins Becky

I give Harley about two tablespoons of kibble a day which he'll eat all or most of. I use the break down from my bag of Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul that two tablespoons is about 80-90 calories and I read on here some where that hedgehogs only needs 80-100 calories max a day. I'm not restricting his food as much as just being aware of how much he eats. He's at a perfect weight for his size right now. My first hedgehog Bartles, I got him back in 98 and the hedgehog food back then was designed as a treat for WILD hedgehogs who hibernate. I had no idea of this and poor Bartles became HUGE. So after that I've been really cautious. I hope that helps answer the question somewhat, I know it wasn't exactly what you were looking for.
