Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/18 11:18 So I just became the proud parent of two finches. In thier care it reccomends giving them hard boiled eggs as a suplement. So Kiki got a bit too. She loved it. Does any one else give thier hedgies eggs? Should I be restrictive of how often I give her eggs? On a side note I'm really glad she's started accepting treats. For the first few months she wouldn't eat anything out of my hand. It started with cat food, moved up to mealies, and now includes berries, eggs, chicken, and a nibble of sunchips. I feel bad about letting her have sunchips, but god does she love french onion! I don't give them to her often, but if mommy is having french onion sunchips Kiki crawls out form her blankie and makes her demands. It's just so rare to see her be that assertive.

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/18 11:26 Hedgehogs LOVE hard boiled eggs and they are good for them to boo! Since you have created a Kiki sunchip addict I would just be sure to give them in moderation. They aren't the worst thing to give her. As long as her diet mainly consists of healthy things, the occasional piece of sunchip probably won't be a big deal, of course this is merely my humble opinion I am not a hedgie nutritional expert.

My Isabel's favorite non bug treat food was grapefruit of all things! Harley's is chicken.

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/18 11:41 Oh you terrible mommy person! Letting your baby have yummy treats in addition to her dinner!

I think you're fine with occasional bits of hard boiled egg and sunchips...
there are definitely worse things for her to get into!

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/18 12:08 I've offered hard boiled eggs to Satin. She doesn't seem to think they qualify as food

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/18 14:25 I love watching my little one try new foods. I tried feeding her mango which she smelled and then took a bite of and then completely lost interest. At least it was more than the raspberry which she didn't even give a second glance to. They are so particular. I tried a hard boiled egg but it was the first night I had her and she was too scared of me to eat it. I love my hedgie! Becky

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/22 10:57 Sarah what is the "hedgehog's trick"? It's been killing me. Off the top of my head I'd say balling.

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/04/22 16:26 I've tried giving Dingo hard boiled eggs on quite a few occasions ( I'm an egg lover myself ) but, he doesn't seem to be very interested. He loves rice though, it's his favorite Dingo's mom

LOL. I've kinda been wondering the same thing.

I don't eat eggs, but I think I might buy some to give to Omelette. I'm always looking for new ways to spoil her with treats. At least my boyfriend will be happy since he loves eggs.

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/05/06 11:47 I think my boyfriend read someplace recently that they like just the egg whites more than the whole scrambled egg? Is there any truth to this? I have my boy Stedman eating some scrambled but he'll honestly eat almost anything that isn't nailed down!
My stuck up ladies Oprah and Mrs. Phlyddia Featherbottom are the exact opposite and won't touch any treats other than worms. I wish they would let me give them other fun goodies.

We saw that youtube cilantro video and ran out to get some cilantro... Stedman snatched it away and took it into his house to eat and that was the end of it. I'll have to try some catnip next I guess. Has anybody tried to give them mint or sage?

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/05/06 13:12 I've tried a number of different herbs - so far the hands down...err paws down favorites are rosemary, mint and cilantro. The sage was pretty much ignored. Stasi

Re:Hard boiled eggs - 2008/05/06 13:30 Drat I have tons of sage lol
I have cilantro and Rosemary. The cilantro seems to have done it for Stedman so I guess I'll try the rosemary tonight with everybody and see if there are any takers.

Do you think they like eggbeaters better than regular eggs?

I think it literally refers to balling up but the reason I picked it is that it reminds me of what my college philosophy prof said, "The hedgehog is a scholar who knows one big thing." And he loved my hedgie Bartleby, I liked to think hedgehogs know the secret to the universe but are too prickly to share.
