Newbie... - 2008/04/19 17:49
Hello everyone! My names Amber Greene, I live in Lenoir, NC, and raise English Spot rabbits. I was going to get into breedin hedgies, but I got an email from the lady whos waitin list I'm on, there has been some complications. She has some babies who are now carriers of WHS. She was unaware that one of her males had it, he was actually thought to be one of the cleanest of WHS. But he has sired alot of her herd and a lot of litters that have been sold to other breeders around the country. I have made plans to hold off on gettin my breedin hedgies until around August of next year, and am plannin on buyin some of her WHS hedgies to help her out. It's very unfortunate that this happened, but you never know whats hidin behind those genes.
The last hedgie I owned was my little chocolate girl, Calista. She passed away in November of last year. I did some research on the lady that raised her and her parents. It turns out that Calista's parents were littermates, the lady knowing that bred them anyway. After findin that out, I think it may have been and internal deformity that we didn't catch. She was barely over 1 year old But now she's up in hedgie heaven wheelin away with all her buddies!
I also have an Appendix QH gelding named Dan, a Toy Pomeranian named Laci, a Chinchilla named Xavier, 17 English Spots, and 3 meat rabbits. You can see them on my site... http://www.freewebs.com/greenbeansfarm/
I'm also getting a male Degu and a possibly pregnant female Degu in May. I'm excited about that
I love this forum, I've been lurking around for a few months now, never thought to introduce myself lol.
~Amber

Hello and welcome to the forums! Wow, 17 rabbits? Sounds like a lot of work! I was actually a bit confused when I read your first post, not being familiar with horses (the Appendix QH threw me off). But he is gorgeous! All your animals are.

I googled meat rabbits and the first thing that came up was titled: Raising Rabbits for Fun and Food. So you eat your pet? I dated a guy once who when he was little thought his dad got him a pet rabbit and he was so excited and then one day he found it in freezer and then his mom cooked it for dinner. I don't think he ever got over it.

Well...go to China or France, they really eat rabbits.
You love pet, but your friend love food... how sad it is....
When I use to live with a hill tribe family in the deep deep deep mountain, I use to have a boar as a pet, or even a bat. You know, I really don't want to eat my pets, but if I don't, I'll die. I really sad about it, when you have pet that you really love and someone took it for food...oh dear!...
From that time, I've never eat boar meat again except I don't know what is that meat is!
One more sadly thing is even hedgehogs are human's food too...
Go to China they eat everything that be able to walk or too run, except cars and cats.

Thanks everyone!
No I don't eat my pets, but meat rabbits are raised for food. I was gonna get into the business, but I couldn't handle it. Smudge was just a bunny I bought for a pet from a meat breeder. Cali was a rescue from that breeder, she was very sick and underweight when I got her. Arista was a gift from my cousin, she's a sweetie.
I do eat rabbit though, just not ones I've owned/met.

Same thing happened to my goat. My dad got a goat, and I thought it was supposed to be my pet. I was so attached to him. But then one day he disappeared. I was only 5 and I was devastated. Later on, I found out he was eaten for dinner. It took me a long time to get over it.

When I was five I used to always beg my dad to get us a lobster at the supermarket. One day he caved and to this day I still remember how devastated I was when he put my new "pet" into a pot of boiling water! My dad was innocent in all of this. He had no idea I was too young to realize that lobsters were food and not pets.

I wouldn't be able to handle it either! and that's really sweet that you took Cali in as a rescue
I wouldn't be able to eat rabbits after having them as pets. But then again, I don't eat any animals at all lol. So I'm probably biased.

Omg I know! I heard that some people bake them in clay so they can peel off the quills
These stories are all really sad... I didn't even know that people ate goats
The only one I have like that is one time my dad got a live pig to cook and we had it for like a week. My sister, my cousin, and I had grown kind of attached to it by that point. We were all bawling when they killed it.

I ate goat once. I didn't really like it. It was kind of tough and chewy. I'll take a hamburger any day!

Re:Newbie... - 2008/04/25 09:50
I have eaten rabbit (and goat, and cow, and chicken, and turkey, and etc etc etc) but my husband knows that the rule in our household is if I have petted it while it was furred and breathing, it is a pet not food. My kids seem to feel the same way I do. Therefore, my dreams of self sufficiency (growing a lot of our own food) will stop just this side of actually raising our own meat. :-P
Nice to see another QH fan... reminds me that I need to get pics of this years babies taken out at the farm and posted for people to drool over. *grin* I have lost track of how many babies we have, but I think itis somewhere around 12 so far. Only a couple more to go! Becca
