sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/23 14:45 Peanut likes to burrow in my clothes. She loves to crawl into a jacket I'm wearing until she gets behind me. She also goes under my legs when I'm sitting. It's cute and adorable but she's PINCHY! I want her close by and I want her to like me and think I'm safe but I can't help but jump when her spikes dig into my side even when they are down and relaxed. Anyone have any advice? How do you cuddle with your hedgies? Becky

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/23 14:55 I agree with you, Dingo loves crawling into my sweatshirt pockets. He's also fond of crawling up my back when I lie down, which tickles like crazy

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice on how to prevent being prickled. I've gotten used to the occasional prickles and pinches. I love my little bundle of quills and wouldn't have him any other way

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/23 14:59 Cuddle with your hedgie on you instead of under you.

Mine sometimes like to sleep on my tummy with my shirt pulled over her so she can still feel as though she's under something. She also likes to nose her way into the crook of my arm - she puts her head so it's smushed in tight between my arm and my side and the rest of her body just rests on my forearm.

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/25 17:04 I usually cuddle with Omelette with a blanket. If I notice she starts trying to hide under my shirt, I move her and let her crawl under the blanket. It serves well as a "protective barrier" against her quills. Lisa

I always have a sweatshirt with one of those pockets on them because that has to be Tweetle's favorite place to be

Good luck!!

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/26 14:30 Huffle loves to burrow by my knees and armpits - the downfall is that he's obsessed with my deodorant and lotion so it tends to lead to nibbles! I switched lotions and he still loves it (even though it says "unscented"). Now I try to avoid using it, and if I've just put some on then he spends playtime with daddy. Can't avoid the deodorant though, I just have to catch him before he runs up my sleeve!

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/27 23:59 This is going to sound crazy but just stay with me, the longer you've had your hedgehog the better you will be able to handle him. I'm rarely prickled and I handle Harley every day. You just get used to holding them in such a way they don't stick you. Part of it is just getting used which way their quills grow and keeping that in mind while holding them. When I pick Harley up, I either slide my hand under him or wrap my hand around his back. When wrapping my hand around him I come to him from front to back so his quills are less likely to get me

Re:sometimes cuddling hurts - 2008/04/28 07:38 I completely agree. Already I rarely get stuck with a quill picking her up... unless she sees a bath But what hurts me about cuddling is when she is just exploring around me stiffs under my leg and then decides to back out of a tight spot. Even though her quills are down shes going backwards so they jab right into me!

And has anyone noticed that getting stuck hurts way more than it should? It stings for a bit afterwards. I always know exactly where I was pricked.

I dunno if this is right or anything, but I think that had something to do with the fact that hedgehogs are immune to a lot of poisons and venoms. Also, I noticed that when I'm prickled after my hedgehog has self-anointed, it hurts more. Maybe it's a self defense thing.

Might be time to give Penelope a bath. When they have built up hedgie spit on thier quills from annointing it can irratate your skin. If you rinse her off it may be better.
