Re:What's the food when hedgies live in the forest - 2008/04/28 12:28
well...
African Pygmy Hedgies don't live in a forest. They'd have a little problem with temperature and would die. APH's come from breeding two African types of hedgies together. And my understanding is they lived in a desert. From HHC, "They are naturally an insectivorous animal but will eat other foods of they are available. Besides eating a wide range of insects, they will also dine on small rodents, snakes, bird eggs and chicks, as well as fruit, roots and groundnuts."
European hedgies... that's a different story altogether. From HHC, "Hedgehogs have a mainly insectivorous diet consisting of slugs, snails, earthworms, beetles and earwigs with them preferring one food type over another through the year. They have also been known to eat frogs and mice as well as eggs and chicks of ground-nesting birds."
My computer/internet connection is being a bit of a poop and not letting me get into HHW Resources other than the discussion forum right now But there might be some info there too... check it out.
