No poopy feet - 2008/04/28 22:36 Peanut runs in her wheel like a maniac. I hear her and every morning there is poop smeared all over it. But when I check her feet, they are clean! I even check between her toes. No poop! Do hedgehogs clean their own feet?

ps. what do you think hedgehogs think about when they are wheeling? Do you think they think they're going some place? Or is it just for fun like playing racket ball or something?

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/04/29 01:42 Peanut's feet are made with a special poop repelling coating. j/k She probably cleans them really good because she doesn't like being dirty. She hedgehogs are very neat.

I know exactly what my hedgehogs are thinking when they are on their wheels.... "run away from the crazy lady! every hog for herself!" But hey, that's just my kids.

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/04/29 07:47 Satin's front feet are often clean in the morning... She wades into her water dish

But often needs a footbath for her messy back feet.

It would be interesting to know what they're thinking. So far, I've figured out: I gotta run... run, run, run, run. WAIT!!! change direction. okay. run. run, run, run, run, run. STOOOOP!!! change direction. run.... gotta poop... can't stop... gotta poop... cant stop. okay, maybe I'll pause for a second... poop. okay... run, run, run.... hey, who befowled my wheel? whatever. I gotta run...

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/04/29 12:57 I don't think she would be the first animal in the kingdom to do that! (as gross as it sounds to us!)
Maybe they scrape 'em around on the bottom of the cage!! (picture a person who has stepped in dog poo )

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/05/03 17:35 Silly hedgies, who can tell what they are thinking!

Harley only runs on his wheel at night in absolute darkness. My boyfriend stayed with me while I was sick for a few weeks. Instead of running on his wheel, Harley just sat around staring at Darran, just so he knew who the real boss around here is. He would bury himself in Carefresh bedding and all you could see was his nose and beady little eyes! Like an alligator in a swamp.

The night after Darran left, Harley was back on his wheel ALL night long.

Absolutely! They are so cute, funny and clever. Harley has built a mound of bedding under his water bottle, so the tip is now sticking inside the mound, where he now sleeps so he can drink all day without moving!

I'm in South Carolina too Maggie! Where are you? (Of course you don't have to answer this being online and all.)

I am in Columbia! I only have one hedgie. I got my first one back in college Spring of 1998, and Harley is my fourth. You have three! Very cool. How do you like Rock Hill? I telecommute to Charlotte for work and Rockhill is nice, I always stop at the Peach stand gas station off the exit on 77.

BTW there is a great breeder Emily in Charlotte, that's who I got Harley from. She's on here too.

And it gets better! He runs on his wheel for a few hours then sleeps in his mound under the water bottle but NOW he has buried his food dish too so through out the day I hear crunching and drinking but you can't see him! Too funny! Even funnier when you consider when I have him out he's very open and happily sits with me, but when he's in his house he's very covert. Ninja hedgie!

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/05/06 18:44 Okay,
I don't know how all of you make the gray box show up "somebody wrote"
but I want to respond to Sara, I think, who got Harley from Emily.
I just met Emily by email. I emailed her and we chatted a bit. She will be one I will contact in the future about getting a baby hedgie from.
Harley makes me lol. Really!!!

Sara, you're only about an hour from me, in Rock Hill, right?
Maybe we can meet sometime. Especially since we don't have a hedgehog fest around here.

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/05/07 16:23 I wish I could wake up just one morning and not have to worry about Omelette having poopy feet! Ugh. I swear she definitely does not fall under the category of "neat hedgies". But when she runs on her wheel, I imagine her thinking, "Okay I gotta run...Now get off and check where I am...Everything still looks the same...Okay get back on and run some more..." Lisa

That's what Peanut does too She runs then gets off walks around and then runs some more. I wish she could have some place bigger so she wouldn't have to run on her wheel so much.

Sure I'd love to do something like that. I live near Lake Murray which is about 15 miles out of Columbia, Maybe 90 mintues from Rock Hill.

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/05/09 14:15 Sara, I hope you are feeling better and that the surgery was successful. That is so funny about your hedgie staring at your boyfriend and not wheeling. I can almost visualize it

Spikey loves to burrow in his carefresh or even in his blankie and he will stick his head out and his face looks so cute and earnest. Hedgies are so cute!

Take care,

Andrea

Re:No poopy feet - 2008/05/10 16:25 Harley does the same thing as the other hedgies. He runs on the wheel in about five minute increments then stops to look around. It's so funny.

But he really did give up his wheeling so he could sit up and watch for the stranger who had moved into our house. He decided he could tolerate Darran when he discovered Darran has a hidden pocked in his jacket that Harley can fit into. But Harley still kept a close eye on him, just in case.
