Re:Shavings - 2008/05/02 13:27 Does Peanut use a litter box?

I've been putting newspaper on the bottom, some aspen under wheel and under water bottle, and shredded paper over all of that. It's been working better than just the Aspen. It seems to keep it away from the fleece blankies I put in their bed area.

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/02 16:21 Ugh, this is one thing I HATE about having fleece liners....everything does stick to it! I like the carefresh better than pine/aspen because at least in the wash it tends to wash away....unlike the wood chips.

I'm also in the process of trying shredded junk mail to see how that fares. I think its been doing pretty well so far....it doesn't stick to the fleece as much....but I've yet to tell the absorbency of it. I only started using it a few days ago, so maybe in a couple weeks I'll make a decision if it stays or goes. But, I do like that it is CHEAP....and I get lots of junk mail....and I like recycling Oh, and I think the hedgies appreciate having a lot more of the stuff instead of sparsely filling their boxes/beds.....carefresh is too expensive to overuse (imo). Junk mail. Heck....fill-er-up!

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/02 16:38 I haven't even tried litter training Peanut yet because mostly she poops on me and her wheel and that's pretty much it. Becky

The only thing about using anything that has news print ink on it, it may rub off on your hedgehog! Once during an emergency I put a hedgehog on junkmail for litter and a week into it, he was GREY! I felt so bad. LOL. Not all junk mail will do this just the ones that rub off on your fingers.

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/03 12:07 most junk mail is pretty waxy isn't it? I can't imagine it would be very absorbent. Becky

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/04 15:02 Lots of the shredded mail, etc., that I use is just like regular copy paper. I pull out anything that feels hard or different. Marjorie in South Carolina

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/07 16:11 I use fleece liners for bedding, and in Omelette's litter box I put a layer of paper that I know is safe to use (whether it be newspaper or junk mail), then I put a thin layer of Carefresh. Because I have to agree, that stuff is expensive! I used to use aspen shavings, but one of the reasons I switched was because it would get stuck to everything. Including the carpet outside her cage. Carefresh gets stuck to fleece too, but it's always in bigger chunks, so it's easier to pull off. Lisa

Hi, if you check at your local newspaper you might be able to get unprinted newspaper "end rolls" or even small stacks of unprinted news. I work at a weekly paper and we offer it for a very nominal fee. I take home the unprinted actual newspapers to use for my reptiles for FREE.

What a good idea, thanks!

I haven't had any junk mail that uses newsprint.....at least yet. Most of them seem like it is laser printed, so it doesn't smudge on any of the hedgies. I currently am using it in three of my cages and all of them seem to like it a lot. Also, it has been pretty absorbent too, suprisingly! But I'm still using mostly carefresh in the litterboxes....but am starting to mix in some shreds to see if I can switch them over.

So far so good...but I'm starting to run out already. LOL. I'll have to have my dad keep his shreds for me too...I'll recycle it for him

Re:Shavings - 2008/05/12 19:12 Well, I use carefresh and it seems to be getting all over the place, too, probably from sticking to my hedgies favorite fleece blankie, which he snuggles in. I try to be careful but carefresh still seems to be getting out of his cage and on the carpet upstairs.

My husband is a bit of a neat freak....not too bad but the tendency is there, whereas I tend to be more loose on these kinds of things. But I have been vacuming more and to my husbands credit, he has not complained at all. He loves Spikey, too. In fact, yesterday he came home with a new truck for Spikey to push--it is one of these monster mini trucks with big wheels.
