tube as chew toy - 2008/05/05 12:32 Is it normal for a hedgehog to chew all the edges of a toilet paper tube. She loves her tube and is constantly running around with it on her head but when I wake up in the morning all the edges are chewed. She doesn't seem to bite anything else. She's never bit me before so it is kind of baffling why she likes to chew cardboard so much. Becky

Re:tube as chew toy - 2008/05/05 22:34 She could be anointing with it. I know that my hedgie would anoint with cardboard and nothing else. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=106956777

Re:tube as chew toy - 2008/05/06 07:38 hmm that is a possibility. I didn't notice her foamy in the morning but I'll check more carefully today. At least she doesn't appear to actually be eating it which was my first concern. Becky

Re:tube as chew toy - 2008/05/06 12:57 Sometimes when a hedgehog is hard on her tube the edges can become tattered and it may appear as though it's been chewed. Also I've seen hedgehogs pull a tube off their head, hold it in their mouth and shake it as if to 'kill' it. So your girl is probably safe. But if you are still concerned take the tube out and only let her have it during supervised play. Do this for a week and see if the tube looks the same.
But for the most part hedgie's don't chew on things unless they are anointing. I think it's because their teeth don't continuously grow like a rodents.
I hope this helps!

Re:tube as chew toy - 2008/05/06 13:05 she won't play with it when I'm watching her. She just smells it and walks away. But if I spy on her in the dark in the middle of the night she is always running around with it on her head. So silly! Becky

Re:tube as chew toy - 2008/05/07 12:30 My girls like to chew on their tubes made out of foam- not sure if they anoint with it, seeing as the foam kind of goes away after awhile. *~*Steph*~*
