Oral stage? - 2008/04/30 14:38 Gnarly has been rather mouthy lately.

I blow in his face when he bites, and I make sure not to wear scented lotions, and I wash my hands with dial soap before I take him out.
Any other suggestions?

His little teeth are sharp!

Re:Oral stage? - 2008/04/30 19:10 Well this is only my experience so take it that way....I have one hedgie male that is just very oral. He loves to bite/chew and it is not out of aggression, he is just very fixated and has been since a baby. Now when I bring him out I have a nice thick fleece towel protecting my fingers and craft foam tube for him to focus his chewing on. Good luck, I hope for your guy it is just a phase... Julie Pierce

Re:Oral stage? - 2008/05/05 09:20 umm, did he really wanna bite you like a blood hunger? or just wanna taste how delicious you are? There're really two type of hedgehog bite (like a dog). Sometimes they bite because they feel no safe, so they fight. But in another case they just wanna bite for fun (oral stage).

I guess it's just oral stage like you said. I did let her bite me then she just self anointed.

And it's everytime I take him out, multiple times per play session.

Re:Oral stage? - 2008/05/06 15:18 Do you smoke, or eat alot of garlic? Hedgehogs are very scent oriented, and if they find a smell they like, they will grab it and can hold on for a pretty long time.
When he won't let go, I recommend pinching his nose closed - he'll let go right away. Tell him NO! while you are doing it, and then redirect him to something more appropriate than your appendage to play with.

I actually just bought all new hand soaps, and have not been using my perfume for a full week now.
He's still biting.

Could he be teething, possibly? He's still quilling.

He was actually crawling around all underneath me about 15 minutes ago while I was online and bit my booty! I jumped straight in to the air, and he curled into a ball, and then uncurled all of ten seconds later and looked at me like "what you freak? Your jeans smell/taste delicious!"

Well, I guess you can train your hedgehog not to bite. If he do it, you use your finger and push it to his nose (Don't Hit Him!!!! everything will be more complicated and hard to train) But in the same way, if he do some good thing, you must promise it to give him a meal worm as a reward.

Umm... we call this as... "Classical Conditioning"

Let me tell you a secrete, I use "Classical Conditioning" to train my little girl when she was young. Since I trained her and used all of my day with her (even sleep together) yesterday I said to her to stop running, she stopped and just winking her eyes to me.
